The Department of Podiatry in UJ’s Faculty of Health Sciences is a critical driver of podiatry-related education and research initiatives in South Africa and Africa. The Department of Podiatry was established over 35 years ago and is the only institution in Africa to offer a degree in podiatry. Students come from as far as Gabon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Nigeria, demonstrating the

department’s influence and appeal on the continent. While somewhat isolated, the department’s offering is advanced, including 3D printing and CAD design to help create high- quality corrective devices, and telemedicine. The department’s students get the opportunity to treat patients at an onsite podiatry clinic from their second year of study. Students also

attend clinics and treat patients at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Helen Joseph Hospital, and Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital.
