TOP ITEMS FROM LAZZERI TRIAL Lazzeri is a leading breeder and young plant supplier of ornamental flowers in Italy and they sell poinsettias in the United States as well. After they partnered with MYP for a successful trial of their poinsettia genetics, we decided to continue the partnership by introducing their annual plant line to north American growers in our 2022 trial garden.

PETUNIA TRIAL: BED VERSUS CONTAINER The MYP living catalog trial traditionally features vegetative petunias in ground beds as well as first-year introductions in standalone containers. In recent years we observed some new petunia varieties performing very well in containers their first year and not as well in beds in subsequent years. In the 2022 trial garden we decided to grow a large percentage of our petunias both in grounds beds as well as containers in order to more accurately evaluate their performance in different growing applications. Browse these comparison photos to see whether your favorites grow well in containers or in ground beds – or both! – and help your customers select the right variety for their home gardening needs.

Petunia DuraBloom Royal Pink Dümmen Orange

The DuraBloom series is the flagship garden performance series in the Dümmen Orange petunia offering. This variety is mounded and early to bloom and thus works well in a pot, and also has excellent garden performance and weather tolerance. It will perform very well for homeowners who choose to plant a full bed of it. Think of this as Dümmen Orange’s “Vista Bubblegum”. 26

Petunia Cascadias™ Purple Gem Danziger

Like many of Danziger’s petunia series, Cascadias™ is bred to perform well in multiple applications. Danziger breeds new varieties in Israel and the warm climate there naturally allows them to select heat-tolerant varieties. Their Cascadias™ series, a trailing and aggressive growing series, works well in large combo pots and baskets and will also grow well in homeowners’ flower beds.

Petunia Flower Showers Mayan Sunset Westflowers

This variety was introduced in 2022 as a Crazytunia, and for 2023 Westflowers is moving this variety into a new series called Flower Showers. Mayan Sunset makes a true “flower shower” when grown in baskets, but also performed very well in our ground beds. Use this versatile series in multiple applications for high impact peachy orange color.

27

Petunia Dekko™ Sorbet Syngenta Flowers

The Dekko™ series is Syngenta’s medium sized flower series that boasts excellent garden and summer-long performance. Many of Syngenta’s Kwik Kombos™ use Dekko™ petunias as their petunia series. Growers can use this series in hanging baskets and deco pots, and it will also perform well in ground beds.

Petunia Blanket® Silver Surprise Greenfuse Botanicals

This variety from Greenfuse Botanicals is a stunner in pots, hanging baskets, and ground beds. Like Wave® Petunias, the Blanket® series is an aggressive growing variety that truly makes a “blanket” of color. Use this variety for either application in your production.

28

Petunia Headliner™ Premium Enchanted Sky Selecta

Among the many colors of Sky petunias, Enchanted Sky stands out as one of the best summer performers in multiple applications. This variety looks great in a standalone pot, mixed baskets, deco pots, and in our ground bed trial.

Petunia Hells™ Premium Heat Westflowers

This variety uses the genetically modified corn gene to achieve its orange color. Hells™ Heat’s bright orange color may be best utilized to give containers and mixes a pop of color. We would not recommend this variety for ground bed planting based on our trials.

29

Petunia Hippy Chick™ Violet Danziger

Bred as a standalone variety and featuring unique and attractive flower coloration, this variety will perform well in baskets and combinations. Note that it is rather aggressive and could overpower a combo if paired with less vigorous genetics. You can see from the garden bed photo that it is performing very well and even taking over a yellow petunia next to it.

Petunia Itsy™ Magenta Syngenta Flowers

The Itsy™ small-flowered series features this magenta variety as well as a white that was new in 2022. Despite its small flowers, it provides a large blast of color in both a container and a ground bed. This versatile variety can be used in all imaginable applications, and we have recommended trying this as a substitution for calibrachoa; Itsy™ Magenta for a purple calibrachoa and Itsy™ White for a white calibrachoa in combinations. 30

Petunia Sanguna® Banana Candy Syngenta Flowers

The Sanguna® series is a large flowered series, and while we wouldn’t recommend all Sanguna® varieties for ground beds, Banana Candy is more aggressive and performs well in the ground. This variety is a great color that will work well in hanging basket and deco pot combinations, and it should be paired with equally aggressive varieties.

ADDING SOMETHING NEW TO YOUR TRIED AND TRUE: 5 PROVEN STRATEGIES

By Michael DeBerti, Head Grower at Mast Young Plants

As a young plant supplier, MYP is always looking ahead to new variety introductions. Visitors to our trial garden each summer are always eager to see the 150+ new additions to our program among the 1500+ varieties on display in raised beds, deco pots, and combos.

2022 TRIAL GARDEN NEW VARIETIES GUIDE

MAST YOUNG PLANTS

New variety introductions are part of what we do as a young plant supplier, and our longstanding relationships with breeders from around the world give us confidence that we’re bringing our customers the very best new varieties. The new variety section of our trial garden is actually the last step of a rigorous trialing regimen that includes extensive consultation with breeders, trialing site visits, and evaluation during onsite greenhouse trials led by our innovating manager. I’m always encouraging the growers I speak with across the country to use our ‘living catalog’ trial garden as a source of inspiration they can trust to add improved genetics, unique varieties, and expanded colors and textures to their own programs. Why? Our customers who continuously are adding new varieties to their programs have shared with me a number of benefits they’ve seen: • New and different varieties can be a source of add-on sales • Customers appreciate seeing new and unique varieties that perform well that can’t be found at box stores • New gardeners with no experience with your traditional and tried-and-true offerings are attracted to novel and interesting varieties

32

When there are so many new varieties to choose from, how can growers approach adding them to their programs? Here’s 5 ways you can add in new varieties to your tried-and-true retail program: 1. When planning your sales program, commit a percentage of sales or pot sizes to new items. We can help you with this! Visit our garden to evaluate new varieties displayed in containers, combos, and beds and pick out a few favorites to try next season. Can’t make it to our garden? Our catalog shows which ones are our new varieties, and our website, and social media introduce you to new varieties as well. We back up our products with exceptional technical support and customer service.

2. Round up to a full box order with some new variety items. If you’re short a few trays to make a full box order, add a tray of something that’s brand new to reach the full box minimum. 3. Look at our new varieties and pick out a new variety to try alongside an existing favorite. What varieties and colors do your customers favor? Order a tray of a variety similar to what you’ve had success with and grow it out for comparison alongside your existing customer favorites. For example, consider the versatile Impatiens New Guinea Interspecific Spectra™ White. It grows well in both sun and shade; works well in baskets, mixed containers, and quart production; and is earlier to bloom than many other new guinea impatiens.

This would be an excellent variety to grow out for comparison alongside standard New Guinea Impatiens like Sonic® White or Magnum White. As an interspecific variety, Spectra™ White will tolerate full sun and heat. If you’ve successfully grown Sol Luna™ White or even SunPatiens® Compact Classic White, try growing some Spectra™ White for comparison.

33

4. Try out different combinations of colors & textures using new varieties. I browse our new variety area for colors and textures that could complement varieties or combos and begin to build combos for next season this way. If you order a few trays of new varieties, you can do the same with other items and combos on display. For example, look how an Echinacea Panama Red complements this Lantata Gem Citrine. >>>

And look at how beautiful Lobelia Rift + Glamouphage Pink look together. <<< >>> An eye-catching new variety for 2022 is the Dahlia Dalaya Apricot Red + Yellow Eye.

I broke off a bloom and tried it in several existing combos. It could add complementary color and large blooms to our window box 14, and it could provide contrasting color to the darker tones of window box 15. <<<

<<< It could also make for a beautiful combo when paired with Cuphea Cherrybells and Echinacea Panama Red.

34

5. Try out new varieties in available spaces. Turn some of your business spaces such as storefront ground beds & containers into mini trial areas. Consider adding a “new varieties” display area in your garden center and invite customers to vote for their favorites, and even involve your virtual audiences through social media voting as well. Getting feedback from your customers will help you understand what they’re looking for and attracted to. Order some new varieties for your own employees to create combos with or to trial in their own yards. MYP’s General Manager Brian Weesies trialed a number of new variety combos in his own yard this year with some new for ’23 items.

Verbena Vanessa™ Compact Bordeaux Lantana Gem Diva Pink Verbena Vanessa™ Optik Grape

Lantana Gem Yellow Topaz Dipladenia Madinia™ Deep Red

If it’s in our catalog, we feel strongly that growers and gardeners will be successful with these items as well. So go ahead and add something new to your tried-and-trues!
