Justice First Meets Justice 40
New Alpha Community Development Corporation has conducted two Justice First Tours over the past 5 years. The purpose of the tour is to educate community-based organizations that are working on climate, environmental justice, and other social justice issues about opportunities to work together intersectionality and to advocate for justice first as an umbrella campaign call that everyone can gather under. Every successful movement around the world has had a similar umbrella call. A classic example is the Civil Rights Movement where people gathered and worked for civil rights for a plethora of reasons. Some supporters were inspired by moral and spiritual values, others wanted: the right to vote, to go to the school of their choice, to marry the person of their choice, to remove barriers to employment, to have access to retail stores and services, to travel at the front of the bus and many other reasons. The Justice First Tour came to create the same level of solidarity and alignment among our present day movements and issues. During April to August of 2018, New Alpha Community Development Corporation with the Sierra Club, Dogwood Alliance, and representatives of more than 300 organizations came together in 12 southern states, 25 cities, as well as Wilmington DE, Red Banks NJ, and Yale University. In 2019, New Alpha Community Development Corporation had a faith-based Justice First Tour in 5 southern states and 5 cities. In 2020, the tour was scheduled to go national, however, COVID-19 caused the tour to be rescheduled. From June 6-11, 2022, New Alpha Community Development Corporation in response to many requests across the country to launch the tour again did so in the city of Chicago, Illinois. This current tour is scheduled to visit 22 states and 22 cities. The theme of the tour is ‘Justice First Meets Justice 40”. The tour aims to share information about community-led solutions and implementations with participants across the country. New Alpha Community Development Corporation is also sharing a template for a national platform that will capture the specific community needs that can be addressed by President Biden’s executive order 14008 which is commonly known as the Justice 40 Initiative. New Alpha Community Development Corporation along with its partners and participating organizations strongly believe that by sharing these tools and information, we will be able to maximize the amount of funding that will be allocated to communities by every state department and agency.
