Winston Carroo is an Agriculturist, Rural Development Practitioner and Training Specialist who is currently the Director of International Programs for Agricultural Missions, Inc. (AM), where he has worked for the past 30 years. AMI is a faith based non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting rural peoples, through their local organizations, in their efforts to attain improved quality of life within their communities. AMI's work engages partners on a global scale including the United States. During his tenure at AMI, Winston Carroo has held many positions including those of Network Coordinator for Africa and the Caribbean, Executive Director and Director of Programs, providing the opportunities to develop his competence and skills in areas of organizational development and management, budgeting fundraising and cross-cultural communications while devoting much of his time to meeting the technical needs of rural partners. He is "in his element" while in the field interacting with local farmers and community people during the many training events he delivered, and site visits he conducted. events he delivered, and site visits he conducted. For the past 12 years, his focus is on the development and implementation of the West Africa Initiative (WAI) in Liberia and Sierra. WAI started as an intervention strategy to address food insecurity resulting from the 14 years of civil wars in both countries. These wars devastated rural communities and destroyed the physical and social infrastructure including the farms and resulted in massive displacement of the rural population. What started out as a strategy to improve food security through the local production of staple food crops evolved into a comprehensive rural development program involving water and sanitation, microcredit for women, nutrition, bee keeping and the construction of food storage facilities in local villages. He strongly believes that the development of local institutions and leaders are essential for sustainable outcomes, and this is modeled under his leadership in the WAI Program. Prior to his tenure at AMI, Winston Carroo earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Agronomy at Cornell University and worked in agriculture and the rural development sector at the Federation of Southern Cooperatives in the Southeastern US and with the US Peace Corps in several countries.
