Taking Action on the Opioid Crisis:
T he opioid crisis is a major public health challenge with devastating consequences. Opioids, including prescription painkillers, heroin, and fentanyl, have fueled addiction, overdoses, and fatalities. Laboratories play a crucial role in combating the crisis through advanced opioid detection, monitoring, and treatment. They utilize biological samples like urine, blood, and saliva for accurate drug testing. Rapid, cost-effective immunoassays, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), are used for initial screening, followed by confirmatory tests like gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography- mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for precise identification. Hair and nail testing also offer extended detection windows for retrospective analysis of opioid use.
In addition to drug testing, laboratories support Medication- Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs, which combine behavioral therapy with FDA-approved medications to treat opioid addiction. Methadone reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms under supervision, while buprenorphine blocks opioid effects and minimizes withdrawal. Regular drug testing ensures patient compliance with MAT, optimizing treatment outcomes. To prevent opioid misuse, laboratories assist healthcare providers and regulatory agencies by monitoring prescription drug use. Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) electronically track opioid prescriptions to detect misuse, while urine drug monitoring ensures adherence to treatment plans, detects diversion, and assesses the effectiveness of pain management. Laboratories also play an important role in opioid research and development, conducting genetic studies to explore variations in opioid metabolism and advancing non-opioid pain therapies to reduce reliance on traditional opioids.

Collaborating with public health agencies, laboratories implement harm reduction strategies, such as drug checking services that test illicit drugs for contaminants, and public health campaigns that raise awareness of opioid risks and responsible prescribing. The opioid crisis demands a multifaceted response, and laboratories are at the forefront. Through precise testing, MAT support, prescription monitoring, research, and harm reduction efforts, they play a vital role in combating opioid addiction. Continued innovation and evidence-based strategies will help mitigate the crisis, fostering a healthier and safer futur e.

This unique program provides a bridge between intensive outpatient treatment and independent living, offering individuals a crucial period of transition where they can integrate the lessons learned in treatment into the realities of daily life. The program combines off-site substance abuse intensive outpatient treatment services with on-site recovery support programming. This holistic approach ensures that individuals receive comprehensive care, addressing both the clinical and practical aspects of recovery. The residential setting itself is carefully designed to offer a less restrictive but still supportive environment. This setting is staffed with qualified personnel available 24 hours a day, providing a sense of security and access to guidance when needed. This constant support is essential as individuals grapple with new challenges, strengthen their coping mechanisms, and develop the confidence needed to thrive in a substance-free environment. The core focus of the program is to equip residents with the skills and knowledge necessary to create a life of financial, environmental, and social stability. We believe that addressing these fundamental areas of life is critical for fostering long-term recovery. The program recognizes that these are interconnected and interdependent and requires skills to work effectively. The program's curriculum is rooted in the principles of early recovery skills. Participants delve into understanding the detrimental impact of substances, gaining clarity on how addiction has affected their lives and relationships. They learn to identify triggers, recognize warning signs, and develop strategies for preventing relapse. They gain skills to effectively cope with cravings, manage stress, and navigate challenging situations without resorting to substances. This helps in developing and nurturing a recovery- oriented lifestyle. Beyond the core skills training, the program also emphasizes the development of practical life skills. Residents learn to manage their finances, find and maintain employment, and build healthy relationships. They also develop the ability to create a stable and supportive living environment. STAND, Inc.'s Addictive Disease Transitional Housing program also offers a welcoming atmosphere. The program cultivates a community of mutual support and understanding. From Struggles to Strength: Susan Maxwell’s Inspiring Journey of Recovery and Empowerment
I n the heart of STAND, Inc., a beacon of hope for individuals on the path to recovery, stands Susan Maxwell—an embodiment of resilience, courage, and the transformative power of support. With a wealth of lived experience, Susan, now a dedicated Program Manager, has turned her own tumultuous journey into a guiding light for others navigating the challenges of addiction. A Journey Back to Hope Susan’s story begins in a childhood beset by struggles. At just 14, she found herself drawn into a world of substance use, racing down a path that led her to her first treatment center by age 15. For the next 15 years, Susan battled her addiction through a series of treatment attempts, which often felt like hurdles rather than stepping stones on her road to recovery. Her perseverance shone through as she earned her GED and served four years in the military. Yet, amidst the discipline and structure of military life, Susan continued to struggle with daily drinking—a pattern that fed her addiction instead of breaking it. When she returned home, the familiar environment, coupled with friends who still used substances, proved to be an insurmountable challenge. A Turning Point In 1995, seeking a fresh start and a break from her past, Susan moved to Georgia. However, the transition was far from easy. Living in abandoned houses and facing the harsh realities of homelessness, she ultimately caught a charge that marked a crucial turning point in her life. It was during this time that she entered New Beginnings, but the struggles continued as she grappled with understanding the need for change in her circumstances. It was a friend who introduced her to the 12-step program and eventually encouraged her to explore STAND, Inc. This intervention sparked a profound shift in Susan’s life. She discovered a supportive community that not only acknowledged her past but also embraced the potential of her future.
Susan Maxwell STAND INC Program Manager “I earned from Atlanta Metropolitan College (Associate 2009) and from Georgia State University (bachelor's 2012) both majoring in Criminal Justice after coming into recovery.”
Empowering Others Through Experience After joining STAND, Inc., Susan found a purpose she had long sought. Starting her journey as a Peer Support Specialist, she quickly became an invaluable resource for others facing similar challenges. Her personal journey equipped her with a unique understanding of the struggles her clients endure. "I love helping people," she says, and it's evident that her passion fuels the heart of her work. Now a Program Manager, Susan is instrumental in developing and overseeing supportive programs that resonate with those in recovery. She often reflects on the countless ways her experiences can empower others. “We have so many support programs,” she explains, emphasizing how her lived experience allows her to connect authentically with individuals seeking recovery. A Passionate Workplace In her three years at STAND, Inc., Susan has never encountered a more passionate employer. “The dedication to recovery and the well-being of the individuals we serve is unparalleled,” she reflects. This vibrant environment encourages not just her growth but that of everyone involved in the recovery process. In an era where mental health and addiction struggles are often stigmatized, Susan’s story acts as a powerful reminder that recovery is not just possible—it’s attainable. Her journey from addiction to empowerment showcases the strength of community, the importance of support, and the potential for healing and transformation.
