Getting the correct color has always been one of flexo's biggest challenges. Anilox selection plate type, substrate, and other conditions all play a part in hitting LAB targets, but starting with the proper press-ready ink is critical for repeatability. In response to this need, Pamarco has released for sale its automatic precision proofer: Iris. Utilizing the company's well-known hand proofers and hand proofers with doctor blades in an automatic system, Iris removes operator inconsistencies. Speed, impression, and a selection of anilox rolls built to converter specifications combine to produce

Sustained solutions to your most pressing pressroom concerns.
Dr. Danny Rich is the senior color physicist in the Color Research Laboratory at Sun Chemical Corp. Rich has worked with the Flexo Quality Consortium (FQC), was a founding member of the Standards Working Group (SWG), and most recently joined the FQC Exec- utive Committee. Past President’s Award recipient and chair of the FQC Executive Committee, Jean Engelke shared that Danny has“the unique ability to break down very complex tech- nical concepts and present them to FTA members so that they are able to understand them and, often times, do so with a high degree of humor and entertainment.” Sustainability Excellence Award IGT Global Solutions was presented a Sustainability Excellence Award for its volatile organic compound (VOC) reduction program, and Comexi was presented a Sustainability Excellence Awards for the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of its F2 MC flexo press. One of IGT Global Solutions’ primary products is instant lottery tickets. IGT wanted to produce a more sustainable printing operation that would have less of an environmental impact, increase press efficien- cy, reduce operational costs and minimize hazardous waste. The company implemented a VOC reduction program in its flexographic printing operation, transi- tioning from using solvent inks to a full water-based ink system. After the transition to a full water-based ink system in 2017, 2018 was the first full year IGT used this new system. In addition to using full water-based ink, IGT experienced optimized job changeover times, mini- mized materials waste and increased print quality. The printer reduced VOC output in 2018 by 66 percent when compared to 2015. IGT has also experienced 40 percent sales growth. The second winner, Comexi began developing the LCA as a decision-making tool for its F2 MC flexo press in 2017. Promoting healthier working conditions, the LCA examines the environmental, social and econom- ic impacts of the machine in order to make improve- ments across the board. Creating a tool that can quantify and compare a proj- ect’s environmental impact usage and the entire life cycle of the F2 MC,Comexi said the data collection has yielded environmental improvements in every aspect of the machine’s use, from beginning to end. Aside from having a positive impact on the engineering de- partments, other areas of Comexi have also been pos- itively affected, including sustainability, procurement, marketing, and technical and operational teams.

DuPont Showcases New Look, Products At InfoFlex DuPont Advanced Printing kicked off its attendance at FTA Forum/INFOFLEX 2019 with remarks delivered by Sam Ponzo, Global Business Director during the FTA Annual Awards Banquet. “The vision of DuPont Advanced Printing is to be a market leader and trusted innovation partner, en- abling our customers to grow and outperform compe- tition in the packaging and printing markets,” Ponzo said. “For more than 45 years, we have been among the leaders in the flexographic printing industry and we’re just getting started.” During the show visitors had the opportunity to learn more about DuPont’s most recent offerings, in- cluding Cyrel DLC and Cyrel EASY BRITE Screens. The DuPont team also shares more about the Cyrel FAST 2000 TD processor, which reportedly features several tools and technologies that contribute to high- er plate quality, easier workflow and improved ma- chine serviceability. Launched in March, Cyrel DLC is the newest addition to the award-winning DuPont Cyrel family of flexog- raphic plates. Cyrel DLC is a soft digital plate that uses a new polymer formulation especially designed for the corrugated market, allowing it to perform exceptional- ly with water-based inks on lower quality recycled and thinner liner board, according to the manufacturer. Cyrel EASY BRITE screens are designed to optimize ink laydown in high-volume printing, typically seen when printing a white undercoat, or solid areas with spot colors. They contain a suite of screens that have shown to improve solid printing at volumes of 4.0 bcm and greater. There are five screens in total: two screens designed for customers without the HD Pix- el+ imaging capability and three screens designed to take full advantage of HD Pixel+ imaging. Cyber Graphics Commits As Bellissima Partner Cyber Graphics has been announced by Aniken Graphics, a joint venture between Hamillroad Soft- ware and Apex International, as a full licensed Bellis- sima partner. Cyber was announced as one of the first two approved trade shops for Bellissima DMS for the United States and Canadian markets. Bellissima Digitally Modulated Screening (DMS) is Hamillroad Software’s multi-award winning flexo screening technology. Bellissima DMS is a screen- ing technology that allows customers to produce high-quality flexographic prints equivalent to 350-450 lpi, according to the manufacturer.

Technical Innovation Award Three winners were awarded 2019Technical Innova- tion Awards at this year’s Awards Banquet. The Award honors those who have helped in continuing to ad- vance the flexographic industry toward exceptional performance, productivity and efficiency. In the Prepress - Pressroom category, a Technical In- novation Award was given to Koenig & Bauer Flexo- tecnica for Augmented Reality-DataGlass Remote Sup- port. It provides remote support personnel the ability to experience what a printer’s technical team sees and hears in real time, improving the time in which tech- nicians can fix issues and instantly provide support. The project took approximately 18 months to create, modify and rework parts of the hardware and software so it can work with different devices and machines. The device has a noise-canceling microphone, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and battery built into a band that wraps around the sides and back of a press technician’s head with a camera mounted over the right eye to allow for hands-free operation. This innovation has reduced the number of on-site service calls and provides remote support with a clear understanding of what parts to bring along if an on-site visit is still necessary. Plus, calls are recorded and accessible for the technician to watch and rewatch, if needed. In the Prepress Graphics category, a Technical Inno- vation Award went to Esko for its Print Control Wizard (PCW), a wizard-driven software used in prepress that automates the role of the color expert. It reportedly generates perfect screens and curves for any applica- tion, allowing for plates to be exactly the same. The company worked closely with plate manufacturers from around the world for nearly two years to build an accurate database of specifications for PCW, out- putting screen algorithms called Esko Crystal Screens. What would typically take more than an hour to do, can now be done in 10 to 15 minutes on average, ac- cording to the company. In the Heavy Metal category, a Technical Innovation Award went to Paper Converting Machine Co (PCMC) for SteadyPrint, a combination of hardware and soft- ware that reportedly reduces bounce, improves press speeds by 200 to 400 percent and reduces waste by 35 percent. FTA Hall of Fame Dave Nieman was inducted as the 57th member of the FTA Hall of Fame. Both a business man and a family man, Nieman is a genuine person with everyone he meets. He realizes the more that other people receive recognition, the better it is for them, the better it is for him and the better it is for the team.” That level of integrity spills into his involvement with FTA for the past 30 years, as well. Before the in- ternet and emails simplified communications, Nieman was involved in setting up regional workshops across the United States. As the workshops phased out, Nie- man took on more and more, serving on the FTA Board of Directors and FFTA Board of Trustees for two con- secutive three-year terms from 2004-2010, as FTA Vice Chair, Suppliers and FTA Board Chair. He was a mem- ber of the TEST Oversight Committee, FTA Strategic Planning Initiative, and provided guidance in the for- mation of the Leadership Council, as well as an active part of the FFTA Scholarship Committee. “The first thing that comes to my mind is what a generous person he is, always thinking about every- one else besides himself first,” shared Nieman’s wife of 39 years, Eva.
