MotionSense Wave™Sensor on the Cia™Touchless Kitchen Faucet

The Moen ® Cia™ Collection was named for its unique shape, an elongated ‘C’ with circular elements repeating throughout the design. Meant to create an orderly and calm vibe, the faucet joins rectangular and cylindrical elements with a high-arc spout for a strikingly stunning look. A unique wave sensor was designed specifically to be parallel to the circular surface, offering the option of MotionSense Wave technology without distracting from the sophisticated design.

As we enter the Spring in the Tri-State area, we are all looking to brush aside COVID and return to our regularly scheduled programming . Home remodeling has continued across the country at a brisk pace as the housing markets and demand for household products have sustained the steep increase since late 2020. We will be watching interest rate increases to see the impact that the rate hikes have over the next few months, but interest and demand in the New Jersey/New York housing inventory seems like it will stay at an elevated level for the foreseeable future. With this increased need for more remodels and new construction projects, many homeowners and future homeowners are in greater need for design guidance. To help with your potential upcoming projects, we have included a Project Checklist (GPS–page 6), which showcases all the categories that you need to consider before starting any bathroom or kitchen project as well as the tips on what to bring to a design appointment. For many homeowners deciding to Age in Place and requiring accommodated living spaces, “Home Life” (GPS–Page 20) features some of the newest innovations to hit the market. Through these pages, we showcase two of our designers, Dena Colao (GPS–Page 31) and Paul Gassert (Kohler–Page 8). These designers are well versed in both aging in place innovations as well as on-going design trends. In “Color your World” (GPS–page 32), we explore the movement towards bright finishes for faucets to statement tubs and bold vanity/cabinetry colors. An excess of color is here as homeowners and designers move from blues and grays to brighter tones. Kohler’s continued strong product development with products from the Avoir tankless toilet to the arrival of the Statement and Anthem showering systems highlight some of the best-in- class introductions to our Kohler Signature Store and GPS showroom locations. Readers can also see the creation of many pet-friendly plumbing solutions, which seems to be another step in the evolution of the home and the COVID reality of the house as a haven to family members, human and four-legged. Dogs are very special within the GPS family as most people know and our furry family members deserve the same creature comforts. Lastly, for your Spring weekend local excursions, we highlight Morristown for the mix between colonial and modern. On the edge of one of our oldest branch/showrooms in Morris Plains, Morristown is the perfect mix of old and new. “Washington Slept Here” (GPS–page 30) provides the perfect cultured itinerary for adults and families to take a long weekend through this New Jersey gem. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Best,

Justin Freedman, President

and modern, taupe-colored vanities with glass tops. I loved the look because it was different and modern! Is there a TV show or movie with design that you love? My favorite movie is “The Devil Wears Prada”. I love all the fashion and art shows depicted. Can you share a design problem you encountered and how you solved it? I designed a custom, wall hung, corner vanity for a client. It was a very complicated design and required me to work closely with the manufacturer to get it correct. If you were a color, what color would you be and why? Blue because it’s the color of water, and water can go with the flow, or it can cut its own path out. What type of design project do you find yourself working on most? Is there an aspect you’d like more of? I mostly work on whole houses and primary bathrooms. I enjoy when people are open to my suggestions for color and style.

How do you unwind when you’re feeling stressed out? Wine and a good movie usually do the trick! Is there a design upgrade you’d love to make in your own home? I would love a huge, spa-like primary bathroom with a walk-in shower and freestanding tub. Can you share a trend or something going on in the world of design that fascinates you? Household items that interact with our smart devices! Is there an iconic building or space where you’d like to try living; what about it do you imagine you’d enjoy most? I would love living in the “Invisible House” in Joshua Tree, CA. It would be amazing to be so close to nature, except with the luxuries of a penthouse! What signifies “home” to you? Home is wherever my family and my dogs are! ■

DENA COLAO MORRIS PLAINS

How would you describe your personal design style? I love contemporary style with a touch of the dramatic. Who inspires you? My mom has had a big impact on my interest in design. She would have my sister and I help her decorate the house when we were kids. My interest grew from that. Can you describe a favorite design project you’ve worked on? I helped a client design a primary bathroom with steel gray hardware

T here are multitudes of studies about how color affects your brain, and though preferences for certain colors don’t seem to be innate, most scientists agree that color has a huge impact on how we see the world. When it comes to decor, a judicious use of color can change everything . If you aren’t prepared to choose deeply saturat- ed hues for walls, you can still add a pop of color with appliances, faucets, cabinetry or lighting. The assortment on these pages are just the tip of the color iceberg, and most manufacturers now offer custom colors in addition to standard finishes and styles. HAPPY MEDIUM FINDING COMMON GROUND BETWEEN CLEAN LINES AND A FARMHOUSE FEEL.

T E X T PAUL HAGEN P H O T O G R A P H Y MARCEL PAGE PHOTOGRAPHY

“Early on, the owner showed me an inspiration photo of an island that had this wild stone,” says Spanier. They ultimately found a quartz slab that made a statement—appearing texturally rough while still smooth to the touch.

36

37

W W W . G P S L I V I N G . C O M

T om Spanier of TZS Designs spent years taking this 6,700 square foot house from new construction to family home. His clients’ request: an interior that felt fresh while still offering farmhouse touches that said, “Welcome home.” So how did Spanier set about providing maximum minimalism without losing coziness? “Incorporating rustic elements in a new way,” he explains. “When you think of a farmhouse, you think of wide plank floors and raw, exposed beams,” he continues. “We wanted to do that in a subtle manner.” He points to the beams throughout the open concept kitchen, dining and living room areas, noting how they create delineation between different parts of the space. He also installed LED strips above beams to add extra light without distracting the eye from textural touches including exposed brick and wood grain. “Lighting levels should vary in the space to give variety,” says Spanier. He recommends upping the illumination in kitchens, laundry rooms and bathrooms. That added light exposed every detail of Spanier’s plans to have most of the master bath’s elements feel like they were floating— from the long, seamless vanity to the wall-mounted faucets. He grounded it all at the far end with a sculptural tub, framed by an oversize window.

The main bath (BELOW) has a dual sink under recessed cabinetry by Robern , Jeeves heated towel rack by Amba , a Brizo single handle tub filler and a Juliet tub via MTI . The shower in the basement bath (ABOVE), includes Kohler’s Awaken fixtures and Loure handles.

38

W W W . G P S L I V I N G . C O M

Spanier notes that full blackout window treatments are usually reserved for commercial spaces; “room darkening” shades, which block most light but may offer a soft glow around their perimeter, are sufficient to satisfy most sleepers. Meanwhile, beams offer additional farmhouse energy.

39

W W W . G P S L I V I N G . C O M

In the master bedroom, Spanier had to address what the wealth of windows might mean for sleep- ers. “I always ask my clients; eight or nine out of ten want blackouts,” he admits. He layered room-darken- ing shades and drapes with sheer fabrics for when the homeowners wanted both light and privacy. Spanier notes that the window treatments are also motorized and controlled by remote. If Spanier could ask one thing of most clients, it would be more laundry space, and these clients were no exception. Still, he created easy access throughout—all doors open past 90 degrees, providing access to storage without sacrificing counter space. “I wanted one element in that room to look interesting and kind of out of place,” he adds. So, he chose a Brizo faucet with a knurled finish and “steampunk” energy. The home’s most memorable element is a staircase that wraps around a custom chandelier. Tom’s firm designed the stairs and worked with lighting craftspeo- ple to create a custom, three-story masterpiece. “The best way to get light all the way around without having clunky fixtures on the walls is to do a fixture down the middle,” says Spanier. The results certainly shine. But what did the homeowners think when they finally saw Spanier’s balancing act between darkness and light, old-fashioned farm and contemporary cool? “My client told me it was the nicest house he’s ever seen in his life,” says Spanier. “It was one of the best compli- ments I ever had.” ■

This area is ready for work, with a stainless steel, undermount laundry sink from Elkay and a single- handle, articulating, deck mount faucet from Brizo’s Litze collection.
