More people in Prescott-Russell will en- joy improved access to high-speed Inter- net now that a massive 5,500-kilometre fibre optic network has been completed across eastern Ontario four months ahead of schedule. The network, built by Bell Aliant and Bell, involved laying 520 kilometres of new fibre optic cable to connect 5,000 kilometres of existing lines, as well as building 160 new points of access for high-speed Internet services across the region. Local Internet service providers can purchase bandwidth from these access hubs in order to deliver improved high-speed access. To build this project, the Eastern On- tario Wardens’ Caucus (EOWC) created the Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN), Ontario’s largest rural broadband project. The $170-million initiative is supported through substantial investment from feder- al, provincial and local governments, along with private sector contributions. Andmany people are obviously pleased that the business recognition program has been revived. In fact the 11 th edition has attracted a record number of entries – 248. The response underlines the importance of the awards, observes coordinator Sylvie Leclair. Finalists will be announced March 7 at a press conference at the Chute-à- Blondeau community centre. The new station, the second Evanov Radio Group operation in Québec, will most likely open in Fall, relates Ted Silver, Program Director with the Jewel 1077 Hawkesbury and Jew- el 985 Ottawa. Hudson and Hawkesbury are separate entities and will remain so, he added. Last year, the company received a licence for a new AM French-language sta- tion in Montréal.
