City Councillor, Earl Taylor by Peri Hayes
On St. Thomas City Council since February of 2025, Earl Taylor shares that he had previously run for the ’22 election and lost by five votes. Later, when Tara McCaulley resigned, Mayor Joe Preston asked Earl if he was interested in joining – an offer which he decisively accepted. As Earl says about his inspiration, “I definitely have a desire to do this. I’m seeing so much that interests me. I stepped into this position with an aim to brighten the downtown. With my passion, I want to see these ongoing improvements.” Moreover, the committees on which Earl presently sits include the following: Southwestern Public Health; St. Thomas Public Library Board; Valleyview Home – Board of Management. Housing development and infrastructure in the evolving city are some of Earl’s priorities: “I wanted to ensure that I was involved in the residential growth. As well, there have been huge improvements made and St. Thomas has done a really good job keeping our infrastructure in place. ‘How can I be involved? ‘Maybe I can make a difference!’ – these are the questions that I found myself asking.” In particular, Earl is focused on seeing through the launch of the local PowerCo: “This will bring tremendous change with opportunities for employment.” Meanwhile, Earl has been nourishing the downtown core for over a decade. He was Chair of the Downtown Development Board (DDB) for 10 years, and remains involved as Past Chair. “I want to see downtown thrive, and attract more business so that we can bring more people
