Volunteer Appreciation: St. Thomas Elgin Food Bank by Peri Hayes Karen McDade, Manager of Public Relations and Administration for St. Thomas Elgin Food Bank, proudly commends the efforts of their volunteers: “Our volunteers welcome every client with kindness and dignity.” One long-time volunteer shares what has continued their involvement: “I enjoy helping the community, which in turn helps those less fortunate.” Another member offers, “We all feel that the service is necessary, and we feel good giving back to the community in this way.” A third presents, “There is always something to do in the Food Bank for us retirees looking to keep busy. Whatever they need me for, I am always available”. Meanwhile, their newest addition contributes, “I wanted to help my community, so I joined the Food Bank as a volunteer. I do have a few friends who use this service, which made me want to help even more”. With roughly 90 incredible volunteers involved, their array of roles include client greeters, drivers, packers, receivers, St. Thomas Jackpot Time volunteers and more. “A position with the St. Thomas Elgin Food Bank is stepping into the heartbeat of a community,” Karen enthuses. “It looks like dedicated volunteers and staff members filling shelves with donations from local organizations, neighbours, grocery partners and local farms. It is sorting canned goods by hand, building food hampers with care — knowing each box will land on a kitchen table where it truly matters.” To their volunteers, Karen expresses, “Volunteers are our strength, our backbone, and the key to our family – we could not operate without them! We idolize our volunteers for their
generous giving of time. It is because of them that we can stretch our dollars to help those who really need assistance. Thank you for showing up with compassion, reliability and heart. We see the care you put into every task, big or small, and we are deeply grateful.” Those with inquiries or in need of food assistance are welcome to contact their Food Bank Help Line: 519-878-3663. “Our clients are eligible to pick up a food hamper every 21 days,” Karen states. Food or monetary donations are accepted at their receiving door, located at the back of the building. Karen details, “We accept cheques, cash, CanadaHelps online and e-Transfers to treasurer@stthomaselginfoodbank.org. Be sure to include your full mailing address and email. All donations are truly appreciated, especially during these difficult times.” Joining the St. Thomas Elgin Food Bank family requires a volunteer application and relevant police check. Visit their 24 John Street establishment, email operations@stthomaselginfoodbank.org or phone/text 519-878-3663 for further information.
