TAPPI Young Professionals Division To Host First Virtual Orientation TAPPI’s Young Professionals (YP) Division is hosting its first virtual orientation at 7:00 p.m. EDT on August 20, 2020. The free, 90-minute event will help welcome early career professionals in the paper, pulp, packaging, tissue, and re- lated industries to the TAPPI YP Division. Attendees will hear from esteemed keynote speakers, network with professionals across various TAPPI Divisions, and learn about the many benefits and resources that are available to TAPPI members. The keynote speakers all come from diverse profes- sional backgrounds and industry experiences. They in- clude Mark Lewis, CEO of Sustainable Fiber Technologies and the 2020 Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal award recip- ient; John Edwards, Operations Superintendent of Dom-

tar’s NC5 Fluff Pulp Machine and winner of the 2020 YP of the Year award; and Lexi Ivan, Engineer for Yates Engi- neering and the TAPPI 2020 Student of the Year. They will share their experiences on building a career in the paper, pulp, and packaging industry amid challenging times. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about TAPPI’s Divisions and Interest groups through mod- erated breakout sessions. Each virtual room will serve as a space for attendees to ask Division-specific questions and network with other participants and TAPPI members who have similar career goals and professional interests. The idea for the virtual orientation came to Lena Sharesky, the TAPPI YP Division’s Director of Events, af- ter COVID-19 forced postponements or cancellations of in-person conferences and events, including student and young professional outreach activities. “Networking, staying updated on industry trends and advancements, and learning new skills are critical to career

development, especially for early-career pro- fessionals,” said Sharesky. “The YP Division couldn’t imagine taking a year off from that, so we decided to utilize video conferencing technology to reach young professionals un- til we can get back to face-to-face events. This virtual orientation will safely bring indus- try professionals together and show young professionals how they can sharpen their skillsets, leverage TAPPI’s resources, and continue to build their networks during this crucial point in their careers.” Visit tappi.org/orientation for more infor- mation about the event and to register.
