Student Research Symposium Program Fall 2025

underestimate the value of this class to an extra curricular status. During this presentation I will be challenging that point of view by analyzing some of the biggest benefits that physical education can have in kids during elementary school, demonstrating that Physical Education is not a mere class, but the key of being a good student. I will review the benefits of physical activity across four main fields, psychological, sociological, physical and academic factors. Psychologically, physical activity can improve kids mental health, reduce anxiety and depression by positive neurobiological adaptations. Sociologically, it will help developing social skills like teamwork or conflict resolution. Physically, regular exercise is needed in order to have a long healthy life. Last but not least, academically physical activity enhances concentration and focus, and increases the blood flow to the brain. Luis Palomino - “From the Crow´s Nest to the Dash Sideline” (Session 21) This presentation shares my unique summer experience working in two different parts of the sports world. First, I was an Operations Intern with Minneapolis City SC, the “Crows,” a USL2 soccer club. My role went beyond typical office work. I helped manage game-day events to ensure everything ran smoothly and even had the chance to be a broadcast assistant, helping bring the game to fans online. This “view from the nest” taught me how a professional sports club operates behind the scenes. My second role was as a Youth Sports Coach at DASH Sports. Here, I was directly on the “sidelines,” working with kids. I coached multiple sports, focusing on teaching fundamental skills, promoting teamwork, and creating a positive and fun environment for every child. By comparing these two experiences, this presentation will show the important connection between the business side of a professional club and the community side of youth sports. I will explain how the strategy learned in the front office is crucial for supporting and inspiring the next generation of athletes on the field. Gia Parisi - see Miranda Wilson, “Caffeine Can Be Killer: The Dangers of Energy Drinks” (Poster Session I) Victor Parisi - see Julius Krueger, “Foreign Exchange Markets and Business – A Quick Overview” (Session 14) Jordan Pasbrig - see Toni Jarreau, “Structure To Safety” (Poster Session I) Pablo Perez & David Garcia - “The Effects of MVC’s Campus Diversity on Attitudes Regarding Nutrition, Athletic Performance, Food Economics, Health and Safety” (Poster Session I) This small entrepreneurial business has centered its design on the goal of encouraging hands-on creativity for customers of all ages through memorable experiences with friends and family. The kits focus on seasonal and custom themes to ensure a personalized experience for each customer, regardless of the event or holiday. Ready Set Decorate By T took a great deal of planning and product development, marketing, packaging, and design to ensure customer satisfaction. Ultimately, this small business demonstrates how baking and creativity can work together to inspire joy and engagement through a fully “do-it-yourself” experience.

Pablo Perez - see David Garcia, “Impact of Socioeconomic Diversity at MVC on Food Spending Habits and Access to Healthy Options” (Poster Session 1) Ethan Phillips - “Overview of the Measles Virus” (Poster Session I) Measles is an extremely contagious respiratory disease that has been around since about the 6th century. Rubeola or measles came to its peak in the 1900s. The increase in measles was the driving cause for the vaccine to be released in 1963. Measles is caused when infectious bacteria enters the body, either through the air by coughing and sneezing, these air borne droplets can stay air borne for up to 2 hours. If symptoms occur you can expect to experience flu-like symptoms, rash, and nasal congestion. If not treated properly pneumonia, brain damage or even death can occur. The measles vaccine has been out for decades, and is very commonly used today. The first vaccine was made by a man named Edmondson. Later a new version was made by Schwarz and Moraten that was used widely through other countries rather than the U.S. The vaccine contains a form of the measles, when injected into the body the immune system produces antibodies, killing the vaccine and protecting against a reinfection. Peyton Pinter - “What is an Efficient Home Improvement Credit? (Poster Session II) The poster talks about the recent changes to the Efficient Home Improvement Credit, aimed at encouraging energy-related improvements in people’s everyday homes. The poster looks into eligibility requirements, highlighting that the benefit is intended for individuals who use their home as their main residence and not just for business purposes. The poster also explores how partial business use may affect quality. The key focus is on the changes introduced through legislation passed in 2022, which made drastic changes to the energy-related incentives. The poster compares older versions of the related tax form with newer drafts, highlighting updates in structure, documentation, and clarity. Differences between forms from 2022, 2023, 2024, and the 2025 draft are reviewed, including the addition of new fields and identification requirements. While the credit itself is discussed, the speaker will share a real-life example of how completing the form has helped a family member. The poster sets the stage for a deeper conversation about its purpose, structure, and the impact it has on society. Kiaka Pio - “The Fentanyl Epidemic’s Grip on Missouri and the Nation” (Poster Session III) The fentanyl epidemic has significantly impacted drug enforcement, incarceration patterns, and public safety throughout the United States, including Missouri. The synthetic opioid, fentanyl, was more potent than heroin and has led to a surge in overdose deaths. This has led to changes in the illicit drug supply and intensified law-enforcement responses. ¨National data shows that fentanyl, primarily synthetic opioids, accounts for most opioid-involved deaths”(CDC, 2025). Law enforcement seizures of fentanyl-containing pills and powder have also increased, indicating more widespread availability and distribution networks.
