Marissa Schaldecker - “The Light Shining Through” (Session 15) This piece is a showcase of how much hope can shine through a person’s life like a diamond in the rough. The theme of the piece is mental health. Each person is going through something at some point and you don’t always know that story. So the piece is a depiction that there is always a form of light/hope that will persevere. This image showcases a single eye that peers through to a shining light. It’s framed by a bandiad with the word hope is written across it. From the isolated color to elevate the emotion to the yellow that is the beacon of light that is contrasting with the black and white visual of the photo. In detail the light represents this sense of hope. The flowers are suggesting that the girl in the photo is fragile and mental health is something that can be very fragile. The bandaid is the sense that this dark side of mental health can be covered and healed with Hope. Overall, the image is showcasing the power that just a little hope can give to someone’s mental health story. Marissa Schaldecker - “Misinterpretation of Silence: A Critique of a Peer-Review Interpretation of the Story “Drown” by Junot Díaz” (Session 11) This paper critiques a peer-reviewed interpretation of the story “Drown” by Junot Díaz. Many authors and scholars focus on big ideas like race or even literary style. However, they often easily miss both the personal and emotional side that is hidden on the backburner. In the case of this specific story the main character struggles with silence, relationship, and even identity. Instead of the loud arguments, the story shows the quiet tension and inner conflict. While some of the perspectives offer some great insight, some of the academic readings ignore these subtle details and try to fit the story into various fixed theories. This paper is arguing that the story “ Drown” is more than just a basic understanding of a boy’s coming of age. It’s a deep personal narrative that can easily be misinterpreted. This paper allows for the audience to give a deep insight into a critique of a peer-review article and how it’s misinterpreted. Martiniano Sansone - “Summer Business Operations Internship” (Session 21) During my internship, I performed several activities directly related to my major in Business Administration, which helped me gain practical experience in the administrative field. I assisted with inventory control, learning how stock was monitored, recorded, and managed in a real business environment. This experience strengthened my understanding of inventory and stock management processes. I also handled accounts payable and receivable, which involved managing purchase orders, supplier invoices, and customer records. These tasks improved my organizational and financial management skills. Through data entry and accuracy checks, I enhanced my attention to detail and technical ability to work with business software and databases. Additionally, I organized and filed company documents, supporting the general manager in daily administrative duties. One of my most valuable experiences was preparing tax payment reports, which allowed me to become familiar with compliance procedures and reporting standards. Overall, this internship provided me with hands-on experience that complemented my academic learning, strengthened my administrative competencies, and deepened my understanding of how businesses operate in practice. Bianca Sarbu, Amirah Anthony, Trevyon Chatman, Luke Sarich, Branden Brewer, and Queralt Carbo - “Unseen Crisis: An Exploration of the Student Mental Health Crisis Through Discussion” (Session 24) The mental health crisis is one of the largest silent killers of our time. Currently, over 60% of college students face some form of mental health issue that stems from a variety of challenges in a student’s life. These challenges affect students’ ability to succeed in the classroom and if they will even remain as students at all. These challenges are further exacerbated by the limitations of resources available to students to be able to get the support they need. In this presentation students will debate through the model of discussion. Discussion is a format of debate that involves exploring the issues at hand and constructively through a debate that considers several viewpoints to come to a consensus viewpoint on an issue. This discussion will explore what is needed from a student perspective at Missouri Valley College to best support the mental health of students. Topics of discussion will discuss the athletic, academic, and personal dynamics of mental health needs, consideration of limitations and struggles, before finally approaching a call to action to support student needs with mental health. Luke Sarich - “Team Roping” (Poster Session II) For the Research Symposium my group and I will be presenting different rodeo events. I will be presenting a poster about the team roping event. I am speaking on this topic with three of my classmates Cooper, Owen, and Clayton. I will be talking about what team roping consists of. I will be covering the rules of the event. This also includes the 2 penalties that can add up to 15 seconds added on to your time. There are two ropers, the first one is a header, the second is the heeler. The header is on the left side of the steer and the heeler is on the right side of the steer. They are both working together to get the fastest time possible, while also doing it efficiently on a horse, without receiving any penalties. The penalties can be from either leaving too early, or only catching one leg.
