It’s Hard to Reconnect, but It’s Always Possible

YOU’RE MISSED THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

It’s pretty rare to potential jurors excited for their jury trial, but ever since in-person jury trials have reopened, I’ve seen many jurors who are genuinely happy to be there. Nobody is looking for ways out, not even by claiming COVID-19 exposure or sickness. It’s a wonderful united feeling, but it also reminds me that, in the past year and a half, we’ve been lonelier than ever.

We don’t have to wait for Thanksgiving to enjoy celebrating, either. Celebrations are part of our human experience, and we should celebrate everything! I think this pandemic has been a great reminder to savor everything — especially the people in our lives. We never know when things could change drastically.

As people, it’s a great thing when we acknowledge that our shared experiences affect others. At our firm, we’ve seen alcohol consumption go up since COVID-19. It doesn’t mean people have been drinking and driving more; in fact, they were at home, but it leads to different kinds of consequences, such as worsening an alcohol and/or drug addiction, weakening personal relationships, falling ill, or even dying.

In 2018 — back when pandemics were a figment of our imagination — a Cigna study from the American Journal of Health Promotion suggested a few interesting things about loneliness. For one, although loneliness decreases with age, there are many behavioral factors within people’s control that are most strongly related to loneliness.

Although I recognize the pandemic has brought so much sadness to many people's lives, I do think there have been great sources of sunshine, too. Mainly, we get extra time in little ways. Maybe you don’t have to commute anymore to get to work, go to your classes, or even get to your next doctor check- up. We have more time, whether in spare minutes or hours. It gives us more time to spend with people we care about, or even just to give ourselves a little self-care time. It’s like finding an extra $20 in your pocket when you get an extra 20 minutes to spend with people you love, or even for a little self-care when you need it most.

One of the biggest controllable factors is social media usage, which the study reveals is also strongly associated with social anxiety. It’s no secret that Facebook and Twitter can make us feel insecure, isolated, and even disconnected. When we feel this way, it’s not always easy for us to reach out. It’s easy to say we’re doing okay, and it can be much harder to admit how we really feel. This Thanksgiving, I can’t help but reflect on the importance of taking time to be with friends and family, especially when it can feel easier to emotionally distance ourselves. Getting back to our normal human connections that have been missing (or virtual) for the past year and a half is a huge relief but isn't always easy. I can’t wait to break bread with people I love and care about and make sure I don’t take it for granted.

Speaking of self-care, if you ever need resources for therapy or even 12-step meetings, we have resources available for you — just give us a

call. I’m so grateful for all your support, patience, and understanding through the pandemic journey. Thank you so much, take care of yourselves, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Fighting for Convent Real Estate KATY PERRY’S LEGAL BATTLE WITH NUNS

Katy Perry is known around the globe for having multiple No. 1 hits, including “I Kissed A Girl,” “Teenage Dream,” and “Firework,” but two nuns in Los Angeles know Perry for a completely different reason. They were in a multiyear legal battle with Perry and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles over the purchase of a convent.

the estate due to the fact that the nuns did not have the approval of the pope, the Holy See, or the archbishop. In 2017, a jury found that Hollister intentionally interfered with Perry’s legal purchase. She was ordered to pay both Perry and the archdiocese millions of dollars. The sisters continued to support Hollister, and they both accompanied her to bankruptcy court, where Sister Holzman collapsed and died during the court proceeding. Sister Callanan blamed Perry for the death of Holzman. The convent is back on the market, and it does not appear that Perry will move forward with the purchase.

In 1972, the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary pooled their money and purchased an 8-acre, French-style chateau in Los Angeles. Sisters Rita Callanan and Catherine Rose Holzman lived in the chateau-turned-convent until 2011, when the Archdiocese of Los Angeles reportedly forced them to relocate. Two years later, Archbishop José Gomez sold the property to Perry without any input from the sisters, but the nuns felt that the archdiocese did not have the right to do this.

Gomez accepted a $14.5 million cash offer from Perry, but the nuns refused to sell to her. Believing they had sole ownership of the convent, they instead sold it to restaurateur and developer Dana Hollister. The archdiocese and Perry both sued Hollister for her involvement, claiming she took advantage of the nuns, and a judge invalidated her purchase months after it was made. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled in favor of the archdiocese, creating an opportunity for Perry to buy

What Do You Do When the Police Want to Talk?

The police are knocking on your front door. They want to talk to you about a crime that you may or may have not committed. In fact, they may not even say that you’re a suspect — they just want to know your recent whereabouts and activities.

happy when accused individuals invoke their Fifth Amendment right because it relinquishes their ability to take control and even manipulate the information you provide. However, when you think of it as a constitutional right that came from a time of war and political misjudgment, it’s easy to see why it’s such an important American right. The truth is that most guilty and innocent people don’t understand that speaking to a law enforcement officer will usually result in their being accused of a crime — yes, even the innocent people. The truth, as someone unfamiliar with the court system may present it, doesn’t always adhere to legal language. Plus, when you’re being accused of a crime, it’s easy to get nervous and lie or say misleading things. Even a well-intentioned officer can construe your words to point toward your guilt. The only case where this is different is during a traffic stop. However, always ask if you’re free to go. Say, “I want to remain silent” from the start, and say, “I do not consent to a search” instead of resisting (they may search anyway), and if they give you a ticket anyway, give your name, birthdate, and sign the ticket or you can be arrested. No matter if you’re guilty or innocent, you deserve fair treatment in a court of law. To ensure you get fair treatment, don’t forget to stay quiet, and call our expert criminal lawyer when under pressure by an officer.

What do you do?

Do NOT talk to them. Call your criminal defense lawyer. It’s important to be polite and be honest when speaking to the police. Lying to an officer can get you into serious trouble, even if you wouldn’t have been before. Say, “Thank you for coming to speak with me, but I invoke my Fifth Amendment right and must call my lawyer if you want to discuss anything further. Best of luck.” What is the Fifth Amendment, exactly? The Fifth Amendment is the accused’s right to remain silent and not “be compelled” to act as a witness against oneself. That means you don’t have to tell anyone about your business, what you were doing, or when you were doing it — at least, not by yourself.

Unfortunately, the Fifth Amendment has been slightly politicized over the years. Not all politicians and judges are

Quick Gut Health Tips for Travelers WHY DOES YOUR STOMACH HURT WHILE TRAVELING?

Instead, drink plenty of water, which can also help alleviate the risk of constipation. If that’s your main concern, keep in mind that Dr. Ravella says a lack of fiber is the main reason for constipation while traveling. An easy way to avoid this is to eat whole-plant foods, even at restaurants.

If your symptoms worsen into fever, bloody diarrhea, bloody vomiting, or severe abdominal pain, see a health care provider right away. Healthline, “Travel can be a hectic time … You may be eating out more and eating new foods in new locations, including more processed foods, and it’s easy to overeat in this setting, placing more stress on your digestive system than at home.” The best solution is to take things slow to avoid overeating. Not only does overeating stretch your stomach, but also “research has found that people who overeat are 10 times more likely to need emergency medical attention for food obstruction,” Dr. Ravella says.
