Distracted Driving Distracted driving crashes are those in which at least one driver was distracted, inattentive, or using a cell phone. Distracted driving is a leading contributing factor for all crashes, with almost one out of every four crashes related to distracted driving. However, these crashes represented a smaller share, 19.5%, of KSI crashes. Overall, about 3.1% (505 out of 16,536) of distracted driving-related crashes resulted in KSI. This rate is similar to the overall KSI rate of 3.8% of all crashes, indicating that distracted driving isn’t a prominent contributing factor in crashes with severe outcomes.
