" $ 5 6 " - * 5 4 r / & 8 4 WELCOME TO A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE: RUSSELL TOWNSHIP

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

The KinClub project announcement fol- lows soon after the latest online Money Sense report which ranks the best places to live in Canada based on a variety of fac- tors, including employment figures, average income, community services available, and other points. The KinClub presentation noted that Russell Township now ranks third out of 415 communities in the Money Sense list of “Best Places to Live in Canada” and the club will make note of that in its signage project. Council will also take steps to make sure both residents of the municipality and newcomers to the area, including potential business investors, are aware of Russell Township’s new Money Sense ranking. Township council accepted a report from administration, which includes a recommen- dation for installation of six promotional signs at the main entrances to the township, which would proclaim Russell Township as the third-best place to live in Canada. The township could also do online promotional posts through its social media links. Cost of the physical promotional signage would be about $1800 and would fall under the existing budget allowance for promotional materials. Council received the report for further study and a decision at a future session. Some council members indicated they would like a seventh promotional sign set up outside of the municipal office, and also, that the promotional signs should bear the names of all four villages in the township.

Welcome to Russell Township, one of the best places to live. That’s going to be the theme for some new welcome sign additions to the municipality. The Russell KinClub unveiled the service club’s new community project proposal to Russell Township council during its August 13 session. The KinClub is fundraising now GPSFSFDUJPOPGBOFXTFSJFTPG8FMDPNFUP Russell signs at the east and west entrances to the Village of Russell, with special fea- tures that will help highlight the municipality to visitors, prospective new families, and business interests. “I am extremely proud that the Kin Club has taken up the challenge of fundraising for new Russell Village signs,” stated Mayor Pierre Leroux. “Their willingness to work with the township for the betterment of the community so soon after the success of the Sports Dome is a testament to their members.” For now township council can offer moral support for the KinClub project, but no pro- mise of financial aid because council is now in the “lame duck” period prior to the October civic election. The “lame duck” regulations forbid the present council to make any major financial spending decisions which would then become the budget responsibility of the new council after the election.

—photo archives
