S hane Henderson, the well-known and highly regarded professional plumber, RGII trainer and assessor sees a digital future for gas training, and has already started developing online courses for the industry. Shane, who is also a director with HAPAI, is a long-time advocate for delivering training online. “With such a limited number of physical training centres in Ireland, access to training is not straightforward,” says Shane. “It can be expensive for the lads to attend. Most are self-employed and have to give up time at work and lose earnings, and then there’s the cost of travel and an overnight hotel if the centre is located far from home.” Shane has experienced the convenience and benefits of online learning himself, having enrolled on a BSc in Construction Health and Safety at Limerick Institute of Technology, which is delivered entirely online. Already highly adept in computing skills, Shane used the lockdown period to rewrite the gas course he teaches and delivered it as an online course to RGIs
free of charge as a trial run. “The feedback I got from the guys was amazing, really positive,” says Shane. “They said they felt very comfortable learning in an online environment and were asking lots more questions than they would face-to-face.” Also a certified PSDP, he has been asked by several companies to deliver online Back to Work Safely training courses for staff returning after lockdown. The first course was for UCC. “I wanted to write and present the course in a way that would be accessible for everyone to understand. I included embedded HSE videos that I edited down, which delivers the information in a very visual way, making it easier to absorb.” Shane has moved on to develop online Covid-19 declaration forms. “I have skills
in computer programming and data collection which I’ve used to develop some simple declaration form collections which can be held on Microsoft platforms. You can fill out the form from your smartphone in less than 30 seconds and upload it to the Cloud. It makes the process quick and easy and it’s free to use. I’ve also developed contact tracing forms.” As well as all of this, Shane is still operating his business Hendersons’ Plumbing and Heating and studying for his BSc. But, looking forward, this busy professional is planning to develop more online health and safety training courses and share more data collection systems.
