This one-day seminar examines autonomous vehicle technology from an ethical lens. Several ethical paradigms are presented as potential critical and necessary lenses to examine the need, rational, impact and potential issues with effective design, commercialization and communication surrounding this technology. Several case studies that examine ethical issues in emergent technology will be used as discussion tools in this interactive workshop with a focus on the social responsibility. An examination of ethical decision making and the use of data for decision making are also key elements of this workshop. Those who are involved in the business, policy and technical aspects of all autonomous vehicle technology, (including commercial, farming and mining vehicles) should attend. Better understanding and use of ethical analytical tools will be an essential goal of this course. The discussion will center on autonomous vehicle technology and the increased positive and negative impacts which will require a need for greater knowledge and dialog between engineers and managers. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course the participants will: • Recognize critical ethical models and perspective that are most relevant to autonomous vehicle technology • Apply ethical models to business decision making within the autonomous vehicle technology arena • Evaluate the potential ethical impact of business decision making and the use of data concerning autonomous vehicle technology • Recognize how to balance risk, capability and cost at acceptable levels.
