Greetings from St. Thomas by Steve Peters Mapleton, located northeast of St. Thomas, was named in 1856. It was well known from the 1850s until the 1980s as the Cheese Making Capital of Elgin County.

New Glasgow was founded in the 1820s and is located in the west end of Elgin County, south of Rodney. Prior to the construction of Highway 401 in the 1960s, Highway 3 was the main east/west route across Southern Ontario.

Middlemarch, west of St. Thomas, first known as Hatherly, was named in 1876. In 1901 the Lake Erie and Detroit River Railway was constructed, and for a brief period, Middlemarch enjoyed passenger service between St. Thomas and Windsor.

Mount Salem, located east of Aylmer, was first known as Louisville and then Hamburg. The “Temperance House” was one of two hotels that were operated in Mount Salem. This building was destroyed by fire in the 1950s.
