Hello everyone, L et’s start with a Public Service reminder! To ensure your name appears on the voter’s list in order to be registered to vote in the upcoming municipal elections, please visit the Municipal website or go to www.vo terlookup.ca. The Delaware Legion #598 celebrated its 60th anniversary and recognized several members with Lifetime Memberships on May 28th. The Legion supports veterans with funds raised from Friday lunches, meat draws, and other events. They regularly host musicians, so if you enjoy live music check the Legion’s Facebook page to get information on upcoming performances! On June 11th, the 132nd Poplar Hill Picnic – a fun-filled day including games, races, baseball games, lipsync contest and much more kicked off at noon. Let’s not forget the food – the Women’s Institute pies as well as the Poplar Hill & District Lions Chicken BBQ dinner never fail to satisfy! Happy New Year everyone, Most of you will be aware that I completed my term as Warden of Middlesex County in December. It was a year of visiting neighbouring communities and attending events and celebrations and it gave me an opportunity to meet residents from every corner of the County. I enjoyed and was grateful for this opportunity as it allowed me to see first-hand how others are implementing change, innovating and improving life in their communities. The Komoka Kilworth Optimists marked their 50th anniversary, on June 25th with a program including games, face painting, as well as live music and food. The Optimists focus on community activities and fund raisers that benefit kids and their list of accomplishments over the past half century is extensive! It’s been 40 years since the first Del-Ko-Brydge Canada Day event was held! Since 1982, the parade, festivities and fireworks display have rotated between the three communities and this year, it was Delaware’s turn to host all the fun. In the other corner of Middlesex Centre, the Bryanston-Birr Optimist Club started Canada Day celebrations with the Firemen’s Breakfast and hosted a family-focused day including fireworks at dark. Looking forward now, mark your calendars for two events celebrating our “rural roots”! The Tri-County Heritage Club hosts their 44th annual tractor show July 8th – 10th at the Ilderton Fair Grounds, and the Ilderton Fair, which has been a great family event since 1851 runs September 30th – October 2nd . I’ll hope to see you there! Congratulations to all the groups who’ve supported the “community” of MXC and who’ve been making it special for decades and more. All of these long standing events have “someone” in common – YOU – and you know who YOU are! Thank-you to each of you who has worked and contributed to the success of the groups; your dedication and efforts are appreciated and do not go unnoticed! Enjoy the summer, make memories and stay safe, Speaking of change and improving things in communities – Council passed the 2025 Budget at the final council meeting in December and I’d like to highlight some of the projects staff will be undertaking in the year ahead. Although we always welcome Community Services projects in our communities, those completed with the support of local service clubs generate additional excitement. Typically, these are large-budget projects that include road and bridge repairs and infrastructure for water and wastewater services. Some specific projects for 2025 include mechanical improvements to the Ilderton Sewage Pump Station and the repairs to the bridge on Vanneck near Sunningdale Road. In an effort to provide complete transparency for our ratepayers, staff worked hard to present all of the data residents need to understand the allocations of their tax dollars. I’ve highlighted just a small part of the information you can access in the 2025 Budget. Please take time to review all of the details and numbers that are available on the MXC webpage (middlesexcentre. ca/budget) and do not hesitate to follow up for answers to your specific questions. The dedication and hard work of our local service clubs make a significant impact on our communities. Facility Services is also undertaking significant capital projects, starting with upgrades to the Ilderton Arena (more than $3.5M) that will see a new refrigeration system, upgraded boards and glass to improve player safety, and renovations and accessibility improvements to the lobby and dressing rooms. The Komoka Community Centre is getting a new accessible washroom. The Coldstream Community Centre is seeing a number of improvements as part of the municipal office renovation. In conjunction with that work, the kitchen in Coldstream will be updated with refreshed counters, cupboards, ceiling, walls and doors and new commercial- grade appliances. charities and raised over $1.7 million. “Taking a passion that I love and creating an event that benefits so many people has been a blessing,” says Steve. The event attracted thousands of people and cars from across North America. When not at home on his estate on the outskirts of Byron, Steve tours invitational car events and shows across North America, showcasing his classic cars.

Looking for a New Shed this Winter? For 15 years, Steve Plunkett turned his love of cars into the Fleetwood Country Cruize-In, an event that supported local Beginning in the mid 1970s, someone saw past the car’s sad state and purchased it. It changed hands a few times over the following decade and a half. The first few owners didn’t work on it before passing it on. Five Sacramento men bought it in the 1980s. They added Mahogany panels, metal framing from a donor car, and painted it red instead of its original black. However, four of the partners lost interest and stopped funding the project leaving the fifth with no option but to sell. A collector purchased the vehicle in the late 1980s and finished restoring the body, completed an overhaul of the V-8 engine and rebuilt the transmission. It’s believed to be the only survivor of MGM’s original six. 1949 Cadillac Woody MGM Studios Limo Nothing was too good for movie stars in Hollywood’s golden age of movies. Favourite silver screen performers of the time included Clark Gable, Katherine Hepburn, Judy Garland, and Elizabeth Taylor. In its previous life, one of Steve Plunkett’s legendary Fleetwoods chauffeured those legends and many other to and from movie sets. “I love cars with a story,” Steve says. “I have many with an interesting history often related to famous people.” The 1949 Cadillac Woody MGM Studios Limo was among the last series of coach-built cars by Fleetwood. Between 1947-’49, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) ordered six of the Series 75 cars that Cadillac called “Imperial sedans.” This particular vehicle entered the marketplace when MGM purchased it from Hillcrest Cadillac in Beverly Hills. It’s one of two that were customized and given wood-framed bodies by legendary Austrian Maurice Schwartz of Los Angeles for MGM. Mr. Schwartz altered the car’s contours, embedded real wood on the outside and turned the vehicle into a showpiece. The luxurious interior featured soft Bedford cord upholstery. The seven-passenger limo was long and roomy, with a 136-inch (11.3 foot) wheelbase. One day in the 1950s, the driver missed a turn and rolled the car on a winding road heading into Big Bear Lake, California. It was totaled. It sat at a wrecker’s yard in San Bernadino for many years and seemed destined for the crusher. Its doors had been removed and it was being used as a guard dog kennel.

Happy January/February Komoka Kilworth Happy New Year to you all and cheers to an awesome 2025. Let’s talk about the municipal budget. This is my second year being on the Budget Committee Working Group and again I found it a valuable experience. It is interesting to see how things like the Asset Management Plan, the Corporate Strategic Plan and the needs of the community all flow into the budget, and how it all ties together. As we went through the budget review process in our numerous meetings, it was very evident to me that staff did an

throughout the year. Over the course of 2025, I will be bringing you a closer look at some of these details. Sharing information through the Budget Book and the online Open Budget tool is part of Middlesex Centre’s commitment to providing an open and transparent budget process. exceptional job with efficiencies, reallocations, prioritizing and cuts to keep the property tax increase to all of us all as minimal as possible. I know it is not an easy process, and I applaud staff’s extra efforts. I thank you all for your understanding that we’ve had to prioritize some municipal projects and may have to wait on others. I feel very confident the budget presented strikes the right balance we need as we head into 2025. The Middlesex Centre 2025 Budget Booklet is a tremendous wealth of information, and not just about the budget numbers, but how things work and how everything from various departments all fit together as well. Think of it as a great reference guide

Go Kings! by Paul Mylemans

The Komoka Kings made some changes before Christmas break. In the last game before the Christmas break, the Komoka Kings had some lineup changes. Justin Skirten, who was the team captain, was traded to the Strathroy Rockets in exchange for two local players. Joining the Kings are Ben Funston and Gavin Hern. Ben played 27 games this season with the Strathroy Rockets and Gavin in 17 games. They both played on the same Elgin Middlesex Canucks AAA U18 in 2023-2024 and have been teammates with the Canucks since 2021-2022. Also coming to the Kings is goaltender Zack Irvin, who was obtained from the St. Thomas Stars. Zack was also a member of the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs AAA U18 in 2023-2024. In their first game with the Kings, they were a welcome addition, but the team took a hard-fought 6-4 loss to the division-leading LaSalle Vipers. Some milestones before the Christmas break were Nathan Adams getting his first hat trick on December 18th in London versus the Nationals and Alexander Akena also getting his own first hat trick on December 21st versus the Vipers. The team and coaching staff are eager to start the new year with increased vigor and fighting to move up in the standings. Two Kings players have been selected to play in the GOJHL annual Top Prospects games on Friday, December 27th, at the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena in Elmira. Kings forward Kade McGeen, who is leading the Kings in points with 7 goals and 12 assists, is joined by defenseman Shane Neusteter for the games. Shane is one of 51 players in the games that are drafted by OHL teams. Another Komoka resident, Jimmy Sutherland, also plays in the Top Prospects games. Jimmy is playing with the GOJHL Elmira Sugar Kings and is a call-up to the OHL Guelph Storm, who selected Jimmy in the 2023 OHL Priority Draft. Komoka Kings home games are at the Komoka Wellness Centre. 1 Tunks Lane, Komoka. create beauty within and without of our beings. Remember that beauty is in the “eye” and also in the “I” of the beholder. Thank you, Janet – for sharing your talents and provoking us to dream with you through your art.

Janet Witmer’s Art Passion by Beth Moyer

Janet is a resident of Delaware and has a particular talent for creating art using a variety of mediums. Her favourite medium is watercolour, but she also uses markers, inks, and more recently, her camera. As a young adult, Janet realized painting was something that gave her joy and she has spent many years developing an eye for interesting subjects and exploring the abstract. Her career at CPRI allowed her to use her art therapy training with children as an adjunct to the behavioural work she provided. Once Janet retired, she held an art therapy self-expression class using multi-media at the Women’s Rural Resource Centre in Strathroy, again using creativity as a way for one to express and explore. Janet derives inspiration for her art from nature and from the time she spends on nature hikes. Her constant looking at detail in depth has allowed her to capture images that often turn into abstract art. The following images give us an example of the variety of her work and the pieces may leave one wondering what the image actually is. For example, the image of moss on a fallen tree found along a trail became an interesting abstract with a mural of complimentary colour. Another piece is a combination of vibrant yellow, blue, green and a touch of red. This image was created with alcohol inks. One can appreciate this piece for its colour alone, but I particularly like the fun and energetic feel it has. Janet prefers to work in a non-traditional format using experimental methods, but she also creates images that are traditional. For example, the mountain scene leaves us with no doubt that we are looking at a mountain range. I like the rather surprising colour of the sky. For the last several years Janet has spent much time outdoors traipsing through many forests and photographing what she sees along the way. This has brought her to another medium for expressing herself. The photograph of the bridge I particularly found inspiring. This image I see as a connection for us all as we journey along the road crossing the water, leaving the old year behind and moving into the new. I too am a lover of nature. Janet has inspired me to write poetry to go with her images resulting in two poetry books. We can

Future Stars: Inspiring Young Athletes Through Soccer by Pamma Hubbert Local soccer enthusiasts Nick Taylor and Karsen Fuhrman are on a mission to make youth sports accessible, engaging, and impactful in their community. Co-founders of the Future Stars summer camp, the pair aim to instill a love for soccer in children aged five to twelve while fostering friendships and creating lifelong memories. “We both grew up in the Delaware and Kilworth area and played soccer competitively for much of our childhood and teenage years,” says Nick. “We thought it would be great to share our love for the sport with kids from in and around the neighbourhood.” Recognizing a gap in local summer camp options, Nick and Karsen established Future Stars to fill the void and provide a fun, supportive environment for young athletes. Since its inception, Future Stars has not only provided an outlet for skill development and camaraderie but has also given back to the community. Over the past three years, the camp has raised more than $2,200 for charities supporting youth sports. This year, the camp chose to donate to the Tyler Coleiro 873 Memorial Foundation (Tyco 873 Foundation), a decision deeply rooted in personal connection and shared values. The Tyco 873 Foundation, named in honour of Tyler Coleiro, works to keep kids involved in organized sports by offering financial assistance to families in need within Middlesex County. Tyler, who tragically passed away in 2019, was known for his passion for sports, particularly hockey, and his commitment to those around him. The foundation ensures Tyler’s legacy lives on by promoting sportsmanship and community involvement. “We chose to donate to the Tyco 873 Foundation this year as they invest locally in the lives of youth and families in need of financial support,” explains Nick. “On top of supporting our local community members, both Karsen and I grew up with Tyler and attended the same high school as him. Tyler was a good friend and teammate of mine, always being a friendly and supportive person to be around.” Looking ahead, Nick and Karsen have ambitious plans for the 2025 Future Stars camp, which will be held at Kilworth Park. “We plan to exceed our past performances and donation goals,” shares Nick. “We will continue to enrich the lives of local youth through our camps and our donations.” AlvegoRoot Theatre Trivia Night Manor Park Memorial Hall, 11 Briscoe Street For ticket information and to learn more about AlvegoRoot’s 2024 season, visit www.alvegoroottheatre.com What’s Happening at Landon Library Submitted by Ashleigh Hickey Cursive Writing (Ages 8+) January 20, 2024 10:30 am – noon (Registered)

Parents and guardians interested in enrolling their children can find more information on the camp’s website, www.localfuturestars. com, or reach out via email at localfuturestars@gmail.com. “Our goal is to help local kids discover the same love for soccer that we have whilst giving them an opportunity to make lifelong friends and memories along the way,” Nick adds. Through their dedication to youth sports and community impact, Nick and Karsen are not only shaping the next generation of soccer stars but also ensuring the spirit of giving and connection remains at the heart of their mission.
