Earl Guest Converting Milk Bags to Mats by Richard Young Eighty-four-year-old retiree Earl Guest of Komoka has converted recycled milk bags into mats since 2010 as a labour of love, and a testament to his commitment to helping others. “My sister-in-law used to make them for her church group and deliver them in person to kids in suffering countries. Airlines would not charge for the mats they took with them but that soon changed, and they could not afford to cover the cost on their own, so they stopped making the mats,” says Earl. “I made mats for her regularly and when she stopped, I had an accumulation of mats done and nowhere to take them. I found the charitable organization, Canadian Feed The Children, and have been taking them there since.” Earl says it takes him roughly three days to process each mat. Mats are five feet by three feet in size. He estimates that he has donated about three hundred or more to the charity organization. “I have a soft spot in my heart for kids and hate to see them suffer through no fault of their own,” he says. “I collect the milk bags from three schools, Delaware Public School, Mt. Brydges Public School, and Parkview in Komoka,” says Earl. “The students in these schools have been great.” Anyone who wishes to donate their recycled milk bags to Earl can do so by dropping them off in the box at the end of his driveway at 9817 Glendon Drive in Komoka. Please be sure to remove the tags, and do not include any badly torn bags, or other plastic bags, Earl only uses milk bags to make the mats.
