Pets of the Month We all love our pets, big or small. Send in their photo to make them known to all. Include a brief description about your family pet to tami@villagerpublications.com, and below are some handy tips from your local vet.

Meet Tori… Tori was a sweet border collie mix who was rescued as a senior around the age of 10. She sadly passed away at the end of November 2024, just shy of 12 years old. She loved being around people and would follow her owners wherever they went. She loved to play fetch in the field and run with her dog friends. She was quite the vocal girl and loved to speak her mind! Though she was only with her rescue parents for a short time, she touched their hearts deeply. Tori’s daily greetings at the door and her wonderful personality will be deeply missed by the whole family. Pet Parents: Matt Minshall and Paige Elliott

Meet Max… Max is a six-year-old rescue who lives in Komoka. He is very affectionate, always by our side, day and night, and loves admiring all the lights and

glitter on our new Christmas tree. Pet Parents: Sue and Tom Cates

How can you prevent this for your beloved furry friend? There are many ways to prevent or slow the progression of periodontal disease, including teeth brushing (with pet-safe toothpaste), dental wipes, water additives, and safe chew toys. Dental diets (such as Hill’s T/D diet) are also a great way to keep pets’ teeth clean while they eat, as they are formulated to scrape the teeth as your pet chews. Ensuring your pet is kept up on regular veterinary care and oral exams is one of the most important ways to keep their mouth healthy! When your pet’s dental disease has progressed past stage two, they will likely need to see their vet for dental cleaning (done under sedation) and/or surgery to remove unhealthy teeth. Pet Dental Awareness by Paige (RVT) and Taylor (Client Care Rep) Did you know that February is dental month at Komoka-Kilworth Animal Clinic? Did you also know that 80% of pets have periodontal disease by two years of age? Periodontal disease (an infection of the tissues that hold teeth in place) is caused by bacteria and food particles and is classified into four stages. Stage 1: Gums are inflamed but the tooth’s support is not compromised (gingivitis). Stage 2: Less than 25% of the support is lost (early periodontitis). Stage 3: Between 25-50% of the support is lost, and dental disease is starting to become painful (mild periodontitis). Stage 4: More than 50% of the support is lost, and teeth may be loose or missing (advanced periodontitis). If any of these are left untreated, later stages can cause many systemic diseases including heart problems due to bacteria entering the bloodstream.
