12 - Months A Year After Loss

of detail and practical applications were unmatched. It was more than rules and regulations, though that training certainly exists, and for good reasons, but the understanding of how and why was always emphasized. Of particular comfort was the knowledge that the support provided would not stop simply because the formal initial training had been completed. At every step, I have been encouraged to ask questions and know that additional training is always available. Since taking that first step to become a volunteer, I have had the privilege of meeting so many people who, in all likelihood, I would have had no other reason to have met, all of whom have enriched my life dramatically. My eyes have been opened to unfamiliar cultures, family dynamics, belief systems, opinions, religions, and everything in between. I sang with a man who couldn’t remember what his career had been but remembered all of the lyrics to every John Denver song ever written and watched him sing with gusto and joy. I have had the privilege of hearing people’s love stories and stories that spoke of life’s greatest regrets. In each instance, I am keenly aware of the privilege that I have in bearing witness to lives when they are most vulnerable. It isn’t always easy, and it can certainly be sad. But I’m not afraid of those emotions. I’m only afraid of living a life with no passion or purpose, and it appears that I have found mine in this volunteer work. Each one of us has to find our own path. What gives one person purpose can be very different than what speaks to another. But I encourage you to keep doing the work that is needed to find your purpose and passion as you create a life that may look vastly different from what you imagined it would

be. And remember that you never have to do it alone. There is a community of people who are eager to help you find your way forward. Some of us will be waiting for you at Debbie’s Restaurant & Pie Shoppe, located at 740 Nordahl Road, #114, San Marcos, California 92069 on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. No RSVP necessary, just show up. If you have questions beforehand, please feel free to text or call me at 760) 975-7313. Until then, I wish you well.
