One day th e w onderful cloud th a t showed them th e way to go, rose up and moved forward, and they fol lowed u n til th e cloud stopped. A fter some tim e they came to a place n ear to th e land of Canaan th a t God was going to give to them , and th e cloud stopped and th ey made th e ir camp there. Then one day Moses told th e people to go up into th e new land and ta k e it for th e ir own, and build homes for th e ir fam ilies, for th e Lord h ad told Moses He was ready to give them th e land, for God knew all about th e long, h ard trip
237 back some of th e fru its of th e land. These' 12 spies sta rted ou t and jo u r neyed all th rough th e land of Canaan, and th e Lord kep t th e people from h u rtin g them . One day they came to where some fine grapes were growing, and they cut off a nice cluster, which was so large it took two men to carry it on a stick between them . They also got some pom egranates and figs and sta rted back to th e place where th e peo ple of Israel were camping, and showed them th e fru its of the land. Ten of th e spies said th e new land raised good crops, and h ad cities w ith g reat walls
around them , and th a t th e people were very strong. These spies were afraid to go into th e new land, and so they did no t bring a good report, b u t th e other two spies, named Caleb and Joshua, re membered ^hat God had prom ised to be w ith them and they were anxious to go a t once into th e beau tifu l land of Ca naan, and they begged th e people to go where they could have a home and raise things to ea t and be very happy. The ten spies told th e people no t to go and said th e men living in th e land were giants, and would kill them if they went up, so you see they listened to th e ten spies and were afraid and would no t go.
th e people had tak en for such a long time, and had been living in tents. My, wouldn’t you th in k they would go a t once, for you know God had promised to go w ith them and pro tect them , ju st like a big b ro th er or sister goes w ith you in strang e places where you could no t go alone; b u t they asked Moses to send 12 men as spies, th a t is, men who would go over to th e land first and see w h at the land was like. So Moses picked ou t 12 men and told them to journey all th rough th e land, see w hat kind of people lived there, and he told them no t to fear for God would take care of them , and He told them to bring
