Heb. 6T18. — Sum. Bible. v. 3. The slayer. 1800 years ago th e man slayer lifted up his hand, inno cent blood was shed, and from th a t day Canaan has been defiled. The man slayer has lost his inheritance. The Jews are banished from th e ir land, strang ers dwell in th e lands which Jehovah apportioned to th e tribes, bu t w ithin th e veil, in th e heavenly sanct uary, th e H igh P rie st dwells. So long as He abides thus, Israel will rem ain w ithou t th e ir inheritance, b u t He will come forth, and Israel will then receive full forgiveness, and much more, in h e rit every man his dwelling place. —W itherby. K illeth any person u n awares. The same act when done from different motives is not th e same. The avenger took no heed of th e motive of th e slayer, so th e lesson was taugh t th a t motive is of supreme importance in determ ining th e n atu re of an act.— Maclaren. In God’s sight a deed is done when it is determ ined on.— Sel. There is no w ant of discerning in th e eye of God. T h at eye distinguishes between th e accident and th a t which was from malice. I t will be found a t la st th a t many things were done unaw ares and unw ittingly and were never m eant to be done, and who shall say w hat mercy shall be revealed when th a t fact is made clear?— P ark er. God w ished to impress upon His people th a t to p u t an end to a m an’s life under any circum stances was a serious thing. Man is something higher th a n th e beasts th a t perish.— Blaikie. In many m inds th e city of refuge is tak en for an illu stratio n of th e Gospel, b u t th e type fails in several points to characterize th e Gospel of grace. Who is th e man slayer? It seems from Scripture th a t Israel is the one who slew a man unw ittingly, the
faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith .” A little g irl was dying; th e doctor came in, and afte r exam ining her, quietly rem arked to th e nurse, “H er life is ju s t finishing.” The little girl opened her eyes and looking a t him said, “No, doctor, it is ju s t beginning.” To be found in Christ is to begin to live and ever to continue to live. L arge R efuge B u t L ittle F aith . The condemned Israelite did not need much faith , b u t he did need a secure refuge. A woman who was well known for h er simple faith and calmness in tria ls was asked by ano th er lady, who called to get the secret of her fo rtitu d e: “Are you th e woman w ith g reat fa ith ? ” “No,” was th e reply, “ I am not th e woman w ith th e g reat faith , b u t I am th e woman w ith a little faith in the g rea t God.” An illu striou s nobleman, who had filled offices of high responsibility in th e state, thu s expressed him self tow ards th e close of his life: “ I may however declare, th a t in an advanced age, I am enjoying far more solid com fo rt by tru stin g to th e mercy of God th rough th e Gospel of H is Son, th an I ever did in th e days of my though t lessness and folly; nor would I exchange it for any condition of youth, wealth, or worldly joys, accompanied by a vicious course.” v. 2.
