MRS. EDDY ON CONSCRIPTION / “The Crowning Jfest of th e Divine D ictator” is th e phrase which a news paper w riter uses to ch aracterize a ru le Mother Eddy made in h er chapter on “Discipline,” in h er Church Manual. These rules for her own benefit, “ im pelled by a power no t h e r own, were w ritten a t different dates,” she tells us, “ and as th e occasion requ ired .” The p articu lar ru le in question has to do w ith th e distressing problem of domes tic help, which problem it b rillian tly solves in th e following way: “ If th e au th o r of th e Christian Science Text Book calls on th is Board for household help or a handm aid, th e Board shall imm ediately appoint a prop er member of th is church th erefo r and th è appointee shall go imm ediately in obedience to th e call. ‘He th a t loveth fath e r or m other more th a n me is no t w orthy of me.” Mrs. Eddy was clearly a partisan of. conscription.—-Ree. of Chris. Work. GOD ON H ER VISITING LIST We h eard a woman who said she had God on h er “visiting list.” We recoil from th e phrase, b u t it describes a very aw ful commonplace. Thousands have God on th e ir visiting lists. They pay H im courtesy calls, and between th e calls, He is forgotten. P erhap s the call is paid once a week in th e social functions of worship. P erhap s it is paid more rarely, like calls between comparative strangers. How g rea t the con trast between ode who m erely pays Him pop-calls and those who “ dwell in th e secret place of th e Most H igh.” HOW TO JOIN GOD’S FAMILY “As many as receive Him (Jesus C hrist) to them gave he power to become th e children of God, even to them th a t believe on H is nam e: who were born no t of blood, nor o f th e will of man, but of God.”
