A Tiny T-Rex?

How big do you think the erce Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur was? Circle one: Little Big Really Big Really, Really, Really big It turns out not all T-Rex were big. Scientists have discovered a much smaller relative of the dinosaur.

What is the T-Rex Called? This much smaller T-Rex is called Suskityrannus.

How Big Was the Suskityrannus? It was about 3 feet tall and 9 feet long from nose to tail.

Suski comes from the Zuni Native American word for “coyote” and the Latin word “tyrannus,” which means king. Combined, the name would be “Coyote King.” Do you think this is a good name?

Where was this fossil found? The fossil for the Suskityrannus was found by Sterling Nesbitt when he was just 16 years old! He was on a school dig trip in the Zuni Basin of western New Mexico. That was 26 years ago. At first, scientists thought the fossil Nesbitt discovered was a velociraptor. New research has determined that is actually a cousin of the T-Rex—which is the news!

Constitution Day is celebrated on September 17 each year. This is the day some people, known as “The Founding Fathers,” signed the Constitution of the United States. It was in the year 1787.

The Preamble:

On Constitution Day, everyone in the country is asked to recite the Preamble of the Constitution at the same time.

Who were the Founding Fathers?

The Founding Fathers were a group of men who organized the American colonists’ revolution and formed an independent country—the United States of America. They knew that after they won the war with England, they would need a Constitution to create laws for the new country. The men who led the revolution, worked on the Declaration of Independence, and wrote the Constitution are known as the Founding Fathers. Seven of those men are considered key figures, and students today study their lives and writings.

very year, on the first Monday in September, Americans observe a holiday. Many workers get the day off from their jobs. Children get the day off from school. On Labor Day, our country honors working people and the dignity of labor. The first Labor Day was held just over 140 years ago in New York City. To labor means to work. In 1882, many kinds of workers lived in New York City. There were carpenters, bricklayers, furniture-makers, jewelers, printers, and more. hile they were proud of their work and what they made, many laborers were unhappy with their long hours, unsafe workplaces, and low pay. Many worked 6 or 7 days a week and 12 or 14 hours a day. Pay was so low that even young children had to work.

In the 1880s, New York workers formed groups called craft unions. Bricklayers had their own union. The carpenters had theirs and so did the printers. After a while, these small unions formed a larger union called the Knights of Labor. The Knights of Labor fought for workers’ rights. Their “weapons” were words and votes. They fought to get children out of the factories and the mines. They fought for better pay and safer working environments. Why do I have to get a shot, Doctor? I’m not even sick!

In order to understand how immunizations help you, you need to know a bit about your blood.

Blood carries tiny cells to all parts of your body. There are fat, disk-shaped red cells. There are white cells, too. The white cells have a special job. They fight germs and kill them. White cells keep you well. When germs get in, your white blood cells go to work. But some germs are too strong for an unprepared body. When a doctor gives you a shot, or immunization , this helps your white cells prepare for certain kinds of germs. Shots are like a fire drill. A fire drill gets you ready in case of a real fire. A shot gets you ready in case of a real attack by germs.

We give kids shots to protect them.

To understand that, you need to know a little more about how your body works.

Protect them? How?

White blood cells are larger than red blood cells, and they eat germs.

Germs can get into your body in many ways. They can enter through your mouth or through your nose, or even through a cut in your skin.

About Aesop Aesop was a storyteller. He lived about 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece. His favorite story to tell was a fable. A fable is a very short story with a moral, or a lesson to teach. Aesop’s fable The Fox and the Grapes tells about a fox who tries and tries to reach grapes on a high branch. Embarassed by being unable to jump high enough to reach them, the fox walks o angrily, saying loudly that the grapes are sour and not worth the eort anyway.

History of Ping-Pong

In the 1800s, in England, the winter weather made it hard to play sports, like tennis, outside. People invented an indoor game for wintertime fun. The game was such a hit, that soon, people were playing it year-round.

What is Ping-Pong?

Ping-Pong is a tennis game played on a table with a small ball and small paddles. Use the code to find out another name for this game.

The first Ping-Pong balls were made of different materials. Sometimes they were made of rubber, string, and even old champagne corks.
