Paul and Time Life in the Temporality of Christ L. Ann Jervis Foreword by John Barclay
This major contribution to an ongoing debate about Paul’s theology focuses on the theme of union with Christ. Scholars and students will profit from this lively contribution to Pauline studies, which offers big-picture proposals based on detailed work with Paul’s letters.
“Jervis’s startling proposals require and repay careful attention by all serious students of Paul’s letters.” —BEVERLY ROBERTS GAVENTA, Princeton Theological Seminary (emerita) “This rigorous and challenging book charts a new course in Pauline interpretation. Essential reading for all serious students of Paul’s gospel.” —SUSAN G. EASTMAN, Duke Divinity School “Jervis wrestles profoundly with the greatest theological problem of all: the fact of death.” —MATTHEW V. NOVENSON, University of Edinburgh “I loved this book. It engages some of the deepest questions we face in relation to time, God, and our understanding of Paul. An original, powerful, and profound engagement.” —DOUGLAS A. CAMPBELL, Duke Divinity School “A bold and stimulating thesis with far-reaching implications for many aspects of Pauline theology.” —JAMIE DAVIES, Trinity College, Bristol “A much-needed and genuinely fresh perspective on Pauline the - ology, an approach that has potential to reconfigure the way one might consider the New Testament corpus as a whole.” —LOREN STUCKENBRUCK, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München FROM THE FOREWORD “The great virtue of this book is to make us question our habits of language and thought and to confront us afresh with the strange- ness of Paul’s theology. Jervis draws on features of the philosophy of time, . . . and she is also alert to those (relatively few) interpreters of Paul who have wrestled with his remarkable theological state- ments concerning time. If, as Jervis memorably puts it, for those in Christ death is not fatal, how is this to be believed, hoped, and practiced in a commu- nity that is shaped by such good news? Surprising, even shocking on first read, Jervis’s book forces us to ask if we have read Paul aright at an absolutely central point, and it requires us to seek new patterns of thought in his wake. For that, we should all be heartily grateful.” —John Barclay
