You should contact the school board when you have concerns or questions about the district’s policies, budget, school programs, or safety issues. It's also a good idea to reach out if you want to participate in public meetings, share ideas, or provide feedback about your child’s school. For specific personal issues, like student discipline or individual school matters, it's often best to first contact the school or district administration. Skyline North students—Celine Cahill, Melody Ramirez, Dylan Hernandez, and Aubriana Robb—highlighted a busy start with celebrations, PBIS Gold Recognition, and a No Referral Party. Upcoming activities include a school garden, Fall Festival, community service, and dress-up weeks for Bully Prevention and Red Ribbon Week. They’re also improving in reading, writing, and math with tutoring and assessments, all while having fun and showing good citizenship.

Public Comment T he board meeting is a business meeting of the board held in a public forum. This is not a town hall meeting with the board. There is time during the meeting to receive public comment from citizens to present problems or questions they feel the board should discuss. Individuals are encouraged to address the full board, not individual Board members. The law prohibits the Board from taking action on items not on the agenda. Request to speak cards should be filled out in advance and presented to the Superintendent's Executive Assistant. Stipulated Judgement Extension
DOJ Summary
In 2020, the California Department of Justice (DOJ), Bureau of Children’s Justice investigated BUSD and found that Black students and students with disabilities were disproportionately disciplined. Instead of going to trail, BUSD and the DOJ entered into a stipulated judgement to resolve the issue without admitting liability. During their investigation they found an overreliance on punitive discipline, leading to significantly more school time lost for Black students and students with disabilities. Black students were disciplined for 168% more days than their white peers. The court-approved judgment required revised discipline policies, more mental health services, and quarterly reports to the DOJ. After 5 years BUSD has achieved substantial compliance in 53.8% of the 49 agreed action and substantial compliance at 9 of 12 schools in 74.3% of all items. Suspensions have decreased significantly from 2019 to 2025:

In response to requests from Barstow Unified School District (BUSD) families, the bathrooms at Stringham Park are in the process of being remodeled. The project was launched following a productive meeting between BUSD Superintendent Deanna Swearingen and Barstow City Manager Rochelle Clayton. Barstow Unified thanks Ms. Clayton and the City of Barstow for collaborating with BUSD to upgrade the park’s facilities for the community.

Newsletter SPORTS NEWS 102nd Axe Game
The Barstow High School Lady Aztecs’ Golf team opened the Desert Sky League (DSL) season on September 16, 2025, with a match vs. Adelanto, Granite Hills, Silverado and Victor Valley. Aztecs In Action
Aztecs in Action
After winning the 100th and 101st Axe Games by scores of 49-14 and 32-7, respectively, the Barstow High School Aztecs Football team will travel to Victor Valley for the playing of the 102nd Axe Game and the team’s third straight Axe Game victory. The game marks the start of the Aztecs’ Desert Sky League (DSL) schedule. The Aztecs won the DSL title in 2024, the team’s first outright league championship since 2015.
Barstow High School’s E-Sports Team, the Eztecs will host the “The Fall Brawl” on Oct. 18, inside the Don Bilsborough Gym. The competition is open to any high school student in San Bernardino County. The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Office is a co-sponsor of the event. Use the QR code in the flyer to register.
The Lady Aztecs Volleyball Team opened the Desert Sky League season with 3-0 sweeps of Silverado and Granite Hills high schools. The Lady Aztecs are in pursuit of their
The rivalry began in 1923 and, according to the Victor Valley Daily Press, the two teams played twice a year until 1941 and, after pausing for two years during World War II, played twice a year from 1944 to 1946. The Daily Press reports the team began playing once a year from 1947 until 1960. The last year on record the teams played twice in a regular season is 1961, the Daily Press said. The newspaper referred to the contest as the “game of the axe” on Nov. 15, 1946. How the axe became the symbol of what the teams play for is unknown.

En respuesta a las solicitudes de las familias del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Barstow (BUSD), los baños del Parque Stringham están en proceso de remodelación. El proyecto se inició tras una productiva reunión entre la superintendente del BUSD, Deanna Swearingen, y la administradora municipal de Barstow, Rochelle Clayton. Aztecs in Action
Tras ganar los Juegos Axe número 100 y 101 con marcadores de 49-14 y 32-7, respectivamente, el equipo de fútbol americano Aztecs de la preparatoria Barstow viajará a Victor Valley para disputar su 102.º Juego Axe, su tercera victoria consecutiva. Este partido marca el inicio del calendario de la Desert Sky League (DSL) de los Aztecs. Los Aztecs ganaron el título de la DSL en 2024, su primer campeonato absoluto desde 2015.
El equipo de deportes electrónicos de la preparatoria Barstow, las Eztecs, organizará "The Fall Brawl" el 18 de octubre en el gimnasio Don Bilsborough.
