The Barstow High School Lady Aztecs’ Golf team opened the Desert Sky League (DSL) season on September 16, 2025, with a match vs. Adelanto, Granite Hills, Silverado and Victor Valley. Aztecs In Action
Aztecs in Action
After winning the 100th and 101st Axe Games by scores of 49-14 and 32-7, respectively, the Barstow High School Aztecs Football team will travel to Victor Valley for the playing of the 102nd Axe Game and the team’s third straight Axe Game victory. The game marks the start of the Aztecs’ Desert Sky League (DSL) schedule. The Aztecs won the DSL title in 2024, the team’s first outright league championship since 2015.
Barstow High School’s E-Sports Team, the Eztecs will host the “The Fall Brawl” on Oct. 18, inside the Don Bilsborough Gym. The competition is open to any high school student in San Bernardino County. The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Office is a co-sponsor of the event. Use the QR code in the flyer to register.

The rivalry began in 1923 and, according to the Victor Valley Daily Press, the two teams played twice a year until 1941 and, after pausing for two years during World War II, played twice a year from 1944 to 1946. The Daily Press reports the team began playing once a year from 1947 until 1960. The last year on record the teams played twice in a regular season is 1961, the Daily Press said. The newspaper referred to the contest as the “game of the axe” on Nov. 15, 1946. How the axe became the symbol of what the teams play for is unknown.
