Superintendent’s Welcome It is with great excitement and anticipation that we greet the start of the 2025-2026 school year! As we come together to kick off this new season of learning, I want to take a moment to express my deep gratitude to each member of our school community—students, families, educators, staff, and administrators—who make Barstow Unified such a special place to learn, grow, and thrive. This new school year is brimming with potential and new opportunities for our students to excel academically, socially, and emotionally. We have worked diligently to ensure our students have a school setting that treats each student fairly, equitably, is safe and maintains an environment conducive to learning. Our talented staff is eager to provide an inspiring and supportive learning environment for all students. The start of a new school year promises exciting opportunities for our students and the chance to build on the great work we’ve already done. Meet the School Board of Trustees
Aaron Heldreth, President, Area 4
Aaron Heldreth grew up the son of a Barstow Unified School District employee. He is a United States Navy Veteran and served as an Underwater Construction Diver. He is a University of La Verne graduate, the husband of a former Barstow Unified School District teacher, a father of two girls, and a former San Bernardino County Deputy Sheriff. Swimming competitively for less than one year, 10-year-old Heldreth qualified for the Junior Olympics. After losing his leg and still continuing active duty service, he won two gold medals in swimming for team Navy at the Wounded Warrior games. Mr. Heldreth is actively involved in his two daughters’ schools, the local 4H chapter, and his church. He coaches soccer for a local youth league and enjoys visiting with US Veterans living at the Veterans Home here in Barstow. As an Underwater Construction Diver in the United States Navy, Heldreth hosted several field trips for local schools. The students were most excited about trying on the Mark 5 helmet, seeing the dive chamber, push-up challenges with service members, and hearing all of the shark stories! Mr. Heldreth enjoyed sharing his passion for diving and military service with students. These days, Mr. Heldreth's passion is ensuring his daughters’ education and the education of the students of Barstow prepares them for the real world by giving them the best opportunities available.

Ray Perea, Vice President, Area 2
An experienced member of the Board of Trustees, Ray is serving his third term. An accomplished educator, Ray has a Masters Degree from The University of Southern California, and is a proud graduate of Barstow High School, Class of 1963. Ray served at Barstow College for over 30 years as both an Instructor and Administrator. He shares a heartfelt commitment to students and to the development of their full potential in an environment of opportunity, fairness, and diversity. Ray is a proud U.S. Army Veteran. He and his wife Linda have strong ties to the Barstow community.

Anthony Yslas, Clerk, Area 3
Mr. Yslas, a native of Barstow, began his career with the Barstow Unified School District (BUSD) in 1995 as a custodian at Barstow High School. In 2014, he advanced to the role of lead custodian at the same school. After dedicating 26 years of service to BUSD, Mr. Yslas retired in 2021. However, he continued his commitment to the district as a classified substitute and has since taken on the role of BUSD Board Trustee. Additionally, Mr. Yslas has played a vital part in the success of BUSD through his contributions as an athletic coach.

Meet the School Board of Trustees
Leonard Williams, Trustee, Area 5
B orn and raised in the great city of San Francisco, California, Mr. Williams is a father of two boys. He spent 21 years in the United States Army and retired in 2004. He moved to Barstow in 2009 for a job at Fort Irwin. Since living in Barstow, he has always worked with the children of the community, striving to give them a better life. He is the past president and current board member of Barstow Kiwanis Crossroads and the current Lieutenant Governor Elect of District 36 of Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha (California, Nevada, Hawaii). He serves as the Vice President of the Board at Desert Sanctuary/Haley House, the domestic violence shelter in Barstow. Additionally, he sits on the board of the Barstow Community Coalition and is the Executive Director of the Barstow Youth Sports Coalition, whose motto is "No child should be denied playing a sport because of the social economics of the family." He runs the Barstow Youth Boxing Program, where he sponsors 15 kids every two months. He continually seeks out opportunities for the youth in this community by being an EXP Industry Coach. Elizabeth Givens, Trustee, Area 1 Elizabeth Carmen Givens was born and raised in South Los Angeles, an area deeply impacted by crime and violence. After losing both of her parents in her early twenties, Elizabeth found herself homeless with two young children. Despite the many challenges she faced—including teen motherhood, gang and domestic violence, and generational poverty—she worked tirelessly to overcome these barriers and build a stable life. In 2015, Elizabeth relocated to Barstow, where she served as an executive assistant and campus monitor for the Barstow Unified School District (BUSD). In 2017, she founded Growing Outreach Growing Opportunities (G.O.G.O.), a nonprofit organization committed to ending generational poverty and homelessness. In 2022, G.O.G.O. secured its tax-exempt status. The organization provides housing, case management, outreach, life skills, and job readiness support across Barstow and Los Angeles County. Elizabeth is a certified Community Health Worker and is currently pursuing certification as a Substance Use Disorder Counselor. Her work is rooted in public health, harm reduction, and community empowerment. Elizabeth is a proud mother of four. Two of her children are graduates of Barstow High School (Classes of 2019 and 2023), and her younger two are currently enrolled in BUSD, attending junior high and elementary school. A passionate community advocate, Elizabeth serves on multiple boards and committees, including the San Bernardino County Democratic Central Committee, San Bernardino County Office of Homelessness Desert Region Steering Committee, Barstow NAACP, Southern California Black Chamber of Commerce – Barstow Chapter, High Desert Black Worker Center, and The United States Veteran Support Group. Through her lived experience and unwavering commitment to a brighter future, Elizabeth continues to be a powerful advocate and role model for individuals and families overcoming adversity.

The Phone-Free School Act
Barstow Unified School District Board Policy 5131.8 - Mobile Communication Devices states, in part, “all mobile communication devices, cell phones, smartwatches, etc., shall be turned off during instructional time and shall not be used in any manner that infringes on the privacy rights of any other person. On Sept. 23, 2024, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 3216, the Phone-Free School Act. The legislation requires every school district to have a policy limiting the use of cell phones. All BUSD students will be required to leave any mobile communication device in their backpack or purse or place the device in a school-supplied security case. Students will be allowed access to their phone in the event of an emergency. BUSD Translation Services Barstow Unified School District (BUSD) is committed to ensuring all parents and guardians, including those with limited English proficiency (“LEP”), are able to actively and meaningfully participate in their child’s education. BUSD offers written translations, oral interpretation, interpreter translation, as well as Language Line Solutions Phone or Video Interpreter Services. Parents/Guardians may request that a school site or the District’s Pupil Services Department translate any document that does not fall into one of these categories. Interpretation and translation requests can be made in the front office of a school site, to the school site Principal, to the Superintendent’s Office, or Pupil Services Department at the District Office. Barstow High School Fall Sports
Aztecs In Action
T he Barstow High School Aztecs are looking to add to their impressive number of Desert Sky League (DSL) titles this year. The Lady Aztecs Volleyball team tips-off the Fall Sports Season on Tuesday, August 12 vs. Hesperia and hosts Sultana Thursday, August 14 in the team’s first home match of the season. The Lady Aztecs will be going for their seventh straight DSL title. The Aztec Football squad opens its season on the road Friday, August 22, at Capistrano Valley before returning home Thursday, August 28, to host Serrano. The Aztecs are going for back-to-back DSL titles this season. Aztec Cross Country runners host Baker, Hesperia and Lucerne Valley on Wednesday, August 22, at 8 a.m. The Lady Aztecs’ Golf program won a DSL title last season, the first outright title for a girls’ golf team in school history. Let’s make it two in a row, ladies! The first match is scheduled for Tuesday, September 16, at 3 p.m. at Marine Memorial Golf Course. The Lady Aztecs’ Tennis team will battle for a DSL title and trip to the CIF playoffs this season. First match is scheduled for Tuesday, August 28, at 3 p.m. Matches are played at Barstow Community College.

HAPPENINGS Community Walking Track Ribbon Cutting
Barstow Unified School District hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on June 24, 2025, for our Community Walking Track. Superintendent Deanna Swearingen welcomed the Track’s architects from Ruhnau Clarke, the construction team from Ledesma Meyer, Barstow Mayor Tim Silva, Mayor Pro Tem Barbara Rose and representatives from the offices of Rep. Jay Obernolte, State Sen. Rosalicie Ochoa Bogh, AM Tom Lackey, the Barstow Chamber of Commerce, along with Miss Barstow Mia Burnau and Teen Miss Barstow Princess Jenna Mitzel. Thank you to the Barstow Police Department for keeping the track a safe space to work out. Thank you to our FM&O crew for ensuring the track is a jewel of the community.

Aaron Heldreth, Presidente, Área 4
Aaron Heldreth creció como hijo de un empleado del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Barstow. Es veterano de la Marina de los Estados Unidos y anteriormente se alistó como buzo de construcción submarina. Se graduó de la Universidad de La Verne, es esposo de una exprofesora del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Barstow, padre de dos hijas y exalguacil adjunto del condado de San Bernardino. Tras menos de un año como nadador de competición, a los 10 años, Heldreth se clasificó para los Juegos Olímpicos Juveniles. Tras perder una pierna y continuar en servicio activo en la Marina, ganó dos medallas de oro en natación con el equipo de la Marina en los Juegos de los Guerreros Heridos. El Sr. Heldreth participa activamente en las escuelas de sus dos hijas, en la sección local de 4H y en su iglesia. Es entrenador de fútbol en una liga juvenil local y disfruta visitando a los veteranos estadounidenses que viven en el Hogar de Veteranos de Barstow. Como buzo de construcción subacuática de la Marina de los Estados Unidos, Heldreth organizó varias excursiones para escuelas locales. Ray Perea, Vicepresidente, Área 2
Miembro de larga trayectoria del Consejo Directivo, Ray cumple su tercer mandato. Educador de gran trayectoria, cuenta con una maestría de la Universidad del Sur de California y se enorgullece de graduarse de la Preparatoria Barstow, generación de 1963. Ray trabajó en Barstow College durante más de 30 años como instructor y administrador. Leonard Williams, Síndico, Área 5
Nacido y criado en la gran ciudad de San Francisco, California, el Sr. Williams es padre de dos hijos. Sirvió 21 años en el Ejército de los Estados Unidos y se retiró en 2004. Se mudó a Barstow en 2009 para trabajar en Fort Irwin. Desde que reside en Barstow, siempre ha trabajado con los niños de la comunidad, esforzándose por brindarles una vida mejor. Ley de Escuelas Sin Teléfonos
La Política 5131.8 de la Junta del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Barstow, Dispositivos de Comunicación Móvil, establece, en parte, que “todos los dispositivos de comunicación móvil, teléfonos celulares, relojes inteligentes, etc., deberán apagarse durante el horario escolar y no deberán utilizarse de ninguna manera que infrinja el derecho a la privacidad de otras personas”. El 23 de septiembre de 2024, el gobernador Gavin Newsom promulgó el Proyecto de Ley 3216 de la Asamblea, la Ley de Escuelas sin Teléfonos. Esta legislación exige que cada distrito escolar cuente con una política que limite el uso de teléfonos celulares. Todos los estudiantes deberán dejar cualquier dispositivo de comunicación móvil en su mochila o bolso, o guardarlo en un estuche de seguridad proporcionado por la escuela. Carrillo se desempeña como conserje en la Escuela Primaria Henderson. Deportes de otoño de la escuela secundaria Barstow
Aztecas en acción
Las Aztecas de la Preparatoria Barstow buscan sumar títulos a su impresionante palmarés de la Desert Sky League (DSL) este año. El equipo de voleibol Lady Aztecs inicia la temporada deportiva de otoño el martes 12 de agosto contra Hesperia y recibe a Sultana el jueves 14 de agosto en su primer partido en casa de la temporada. Las Lady Aztecs buscarán su séptimo título consecutivo de la DSL. El equipo de fútbol americano Aztec inicia su temporada como visitantes el viernes 22 de agosto en Capistrano Valley antes de regresar a casa el jueves 28 de agosto para recibir a Serrano. Las Aztecas buscan títulos consecutivos de la DSL esta temporada. Las corredoras de campo traviesa Aztecas reciben a Baker, Hesperia y Lucerne Valley el miércoles 22 de agosto a las 8 a. m. El programa de golf de las Lady Aztecs ganó un título de la DSL la temporada pasada, el primer título absoluto para un equipo de golf femenino en la historia de la escuela. ¡Que sean dos consecutivos, chicas! El primer partido está programado para el martes 16 de septiembre a las 15:00 h en el Campo de Golf Marine Memorial. El equipo de tenis de las Lady Aztecs luchará por el título de la DSL y un pase a los playoffs de la CIF esta temporada. El primer partido está programado para el martes 28 de agosto a las 15:00 h. El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Barstow celebró la ceremonia de inauguración de nuestra Pista de Caminata Comunitaria el 24 de junio de 2025. La superintendente Deanna Swearingen dio la bienvenida a los arquitectos de Ruhnau Clarke, al equipo de construcción de Ledesma Meyer, al alcalde de Barstow Tim Silva, a la alcaldesa pro tempore Barbara Rose y a representantes de las oficinas del representante Jay Obernolte, la senadora estatal Rosalicie Ochoa Bogh, el ministro de Hacienda Tom Lackey, la Cámara de Comercio de Barstow, junto con la señorita Barstow Mia Burnau y la señorita adolescente Barstow Princess Jenna Mitzel. Agradecemos al Departamento de Policía de Barstow por mantener la pista como un espacio seguro para hacer ejercicio.
