Superintendent’s Thanksgiving Message As we enter the month of November, a time traditionally dedicated to gratitude and reflection, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation for each member of our district community. Your dedication, resilience, and partnership make our schools a nurturing environment where every student can thrive. This year's focus is on literacy—an area where we see countless lightbulb moments. When students finally understand a new word, decode a tricky sentence, or share a story of their own, that spark ignites a lifelong love of reading and learning. These moments of discovery are powerful and transformative, fueling confidence and expanding horizons. Let’s continue to inspire these illuminations of understanding and foster a love of literacy in every child. SITE EVENTS Barstow High School Peer Counseling Barstow High School’s Peer Counselors held a 5K Fun Run/Walk to raise money for upcoming events. Thanks to generous donations from family members, friends, teachers and community members, more than $1,200 was raised and will be used to purchase items for upcoming Peer Counseling school-wide events, including Social Hour and the Self-Care Fair.
BHS Welding Space Opens
Welding by students in the redesigned welding space at Barstow High School has begun. This will give our Aztecs the hands-on educational experience they can use to pursue a high-paying career upon graduation.
BHS & CHS Blood Drive The Barstow High School Key Club and Central High School’s ASB recently hosted blood drives at their individual campuses. Thank you to the staff and students who donated the gift of life.

Three Essential District Roles:
The school board works collaboratively with the school district staff to see that the best possible education is provided to district students. Three distinct role are required within the district to make this happen:
The Board: visionary, strategic, role: set the direction: a strategic charge or target for change, and hold the system accountable for results
Administration: tactical role: create and launch plans to meet the strategic charge Teachers and other staff: operational role carry out the plans to achieve the intended results
All three of these roles have to be aligned and integrated. None of the roles can be successful without the others. The Superintendent is the link between the roles, working with the Board to set direction, with administration to see that plans are developed in alignment with the vision, and with district staff to see that the district work is carried out in ways that will achieve the ultimate intended result.
When and how to contact the School Board
You should contact the school board when you have concerns or questions about the district’s policies, budget, school programs, or safety issues. It's also a good idea to reach out if you want to participate in public meetings, share ideas, or provide feedback about your child’s school. For specific personal issues, like student discipline or individual school matters, it's often best to first contact the school or district administration. Public Comment T he board meeting is a business meeting of the board held in a public forum. This is not a town hall meeting with the board. There is time during the meeting to receive public comment from citizens to present problems or questions they feel the board should discuss. Individuals are encouraged to address the full board, not individual Board members. The law prohibits the Board from taking action on items not on the agenda. Request to speak cards should be filled out in advance and presented to the Superintendent's Executive Assistant. DISTRICT OFFICE Culturally Responsive- Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students' behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social-emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also enhances teacher health and well-being. PBIS is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable, and safe learning environments where everyone thrives. Culturally Responsive PBIS (CR-PBIS) extends this framework by integrating culturally relevant practices and responses. It emphasizes the importance of respecting and valuing students' diverse cultural backgrounds, ensuring that behavioral expectations and supports are equitable and meaningful for all students. By doing so, CR-PBIS helps create a more inclusive and responsive school climate, fostering a sense of belonging and respect that supports positive behavior and engagement. PBIS, including CR-PBIS, aligns with Barstow Unified School District’s goal of ensuring that each of our schools treats students fairly, equitably, maintains a safe environment, and fosters an atmosphere conducive to learning. As a Community Outreach Liaison at BUSD, I work to make sure students facing unstable housing or foster care situations can enroll in school immediately—even if they lack immunization records, proof of address, transcripts, or guardianship papers. I arrange transportation to and from students’ schools of origin, advocate for their legal rights under the McKinney Vento Homeless Education Act (which includes free school meals, safe placement, etc.), and help families access essential programs. Beyond school, I connect families with community resources for basic needs like food, clothing, health services, and counseling to ensure they have support to succeed.

What we do:
Getting sick can be tough, but knowing if you have a common cold or the flu can help you take the right steps to feel better. They are both caused by viruses, but the flu is usually more serious. For the 2025-2026 flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expects flu activity to peak between December and February. ● Assist parent/guardians through the Individual Education Plan (IEP) & Section 504 Process. ● Assist parent/guardians with written concerns and requests. ● Help guide and educate parents/guardians to strengthen their advocacy skills. ● Attend meetings with parents/guardians to provide support. We can all work together to keep our schools and homes healthy! Here are the best ways to prevent both the cold and the flu:
Wash Your Hands Often: Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds (sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice!). If soap isn't nearby, use hand sanitizer. Get Your Flu Shot: The flu vaccine is the best protection against the influenza virus and helps prevent serious illness. Cover Your Coughs and Sneezes: Use a tissue, or cough/sneeze into your elbow, not your hands. Throw tissues away right after use. Avoid Touching Your Face: Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth. Stay Home When Sick: If you have a fever or feel very ill, stay home from school or work to rest and avoid spreading germs to others.

Newsletter SPORTS NEWS Aztecs Keep the Axe!
The Barstow High School Cross Country teams will compete in the Desert Sky League Finals on Thursday, November 6, at Horsemen Park in Apple Valley. The Lady Aztecs Golf team competed in the Desert Sky League Finals at Bear Creek Country Club in Victorville. Aztecs In Action
The Axe stays where it belongs, right here in Barstow. For the third straight year, the Barstow High School Aztecs defeated the Victor Valley Jackrabbits in The Axe Game, this year by a score of 21-7. The 102nd Axe Game was played on a chilly and windy Friday night in Victorville and our Aztecs scored 21 unanswered points, A.J. Lealofi intercepted the Jackrabbits quarterback twice, and the offensive and defensive lines dominated their opponent as The Axe stayed on the Aztecs’ sideline.
Lealofi’s interception extinguished the Jackrabbits’ last chance at a possible comeback. Lealofi was honored for his defensive performance by being named the Daily Press Athlete of the Week. second
The Lady Aztecs Volleyball Team qualified for the CIF-SS
Division Six Playoffs. The Lady Aztecs won a thrilling five-set match vs. Oxford Academy of Cypress. The Aztecs’ victory set up a second round match with Valley View High School of Moreno Valley.
The win gave the Aztecs a 1-0 record in the Desert Sky League. A second victory over Silverado moved the Aztecs’ record to 2-0 as they pursue a second straight undefeated Desert Sky League title and a return to the CIF-SS Football Playoffs. Barstow High School Upcoming Athletics
Barstow High School’s E-Sports Team, the Eztecs, hosted the “The Fall Brawl” on Oct. 18, inside the Don Bilsborough Gym. Nearly 20 schools from across San Bernardino County came to Barstow for the competition. Thank you to Coach Sanucci for arranging this event and the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Office for its support of the Eztecs and E-Sports.

Travel Smart: Keep Your Student on Track with Short-Term Independent Study With the upcoming holiday season, we know many families are planning trips that might take them away from home for an extended period. While travel is a wonderful learning experience, we want to ensure your student doesn't fall behind on their academics. That's why our district offers a Short-Term Independent Study program to support families who need to travel for up to 10 school days. This program not only helps your child keep up with their classwork but also ensures their attendance is accounted for during their absence. How to Request Short-Term Independent Study The process is simple, but it does require a little advance planning. Here's what you need to do:
Parent/Teacher Conferences A parent-teacher conference is a scheduled meeting between a child's parents (or guardians) and their teacher. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the child's progress in school, including their academic performance, behavior, strengths, and areas needing improvement. It provides an opportunity for parents and teachers to share information, ask questions, and collaborate on ways to support the child's learning. BUSD is happy to host parent-teacher conferences twice a year, once in November and again in March. Please check with your school for your student’s conference sign-ups.
Complete the Contract: You will be asked to fill out a Short-Term Independent Study contract. This legally binding agreement outlines the responsibilities of the student, parent, and school. Upon your student's return to school , the completed Independent Study packet is due immediately. The teacher will then verify that the work has been completed and is satisfactory.
Work Preparation Time: Once the contract is finalized, the school office will notify your student's teacher, who will then prepare the necessary assignments and materials. Please note that this may take a couple of days, so plan accordingly and initiate the request well before your departure date.
Contact Your School Office: This is the first step! Get in touch with the school office staff as soon as you know your travel dates to begin the process. Packet Pick-Up: Once the work is ready, either the teacher or the school office will contact you to arrange the pick-up of the Independent Study packet.
By taking advantage of the Short-Term Independent Study program, you can enjoy your vacation knowing your child’s learning remains a priority! Contact your school office today if you plan to travel and would like to utilize this option

Asesoramiento entre pares de la escuela secundaria Barstow Los consejeros de pares de la escuela preparatoria Barstow organizaron una carrera/caminata de 5 km para recaudar fondos para los próximos eventos. Gracias a las generosas donaciones de familiares, amigos, maestros y miembros de la comunidad, se recaudaron más de $1,200 que se utilizarán para comprar artículos para los próximos eventos escolares de consejería de pares, como la Hora Social y la Feria de Autocuidado.
Se inaugura el espacio de soldadura de BHS Ya comenzaron las sesiones de soldadura en el espacio rediseñado de la Preparatoria Barstow. Esto brindará a nuestros estudiantes aztecas la experiencia educativa práctica que les permitirá desarrollar una carrera bien remunerada al graduarse.

¡Los aztecas mantienen el hacha!
Los equipos de Campo Traviesa de la Preparatoria Barstow competirán en las Finales de la Liga Desert Sky el jueves 6 de noviembre en el Parque Horsemen de Apple Valley. El equipo de golf Lady Aztecs compitió en las Finales de la Liga Desert Sky en el Club de Campo Bear Creek de Victorville. Aztecas en acción
Aztecs in Action El Hacha se queda donde debe estar, aquí en Barstow. Por tercer año consecutivo, los Aztecs de la Preparatoria Barstow derrotaron a los Jackrabbits de Victor Valley en el Juego del Hacha, este año por 21-7. El 102.º Juego del Hacha se jugó en una fría y ventosa noche de viernes en Victorville, y nuestros Aztecs anotaron 21 puntos sin respuesta. A.J. Lealofi interceptó al mariscal de campo de los Jackrabbits dos veces, y las líneas ofensiva y defensiva dominaron a su oponente mientras el Hacha se mantenía en la banda de los Aztecs.

Viaje inteligentemente: Mantén a tu estudiante bien encaminado con estudios independientes a corto plazo
El propósito de esta reunión es hablar sobre el progreso del niño en la escuela, incluyendo su rendimiento académico, comportamiento, fortalezas y áreas de mejora. Ofrece una oportunidad para que padres y maestros compartan información, hagan preguntas y colaboren para apoyar el aprendizaje del niño. El BUSD se complace en organizar reuniones de padres y maestros dos veces al año, una en noviembre y otra en marzo. Por eso, nuestro distrito ofrece un programa de Estudio Independiente de Corto Plazo para apoyar a las familias que necesitan viajar hasta 10 días escolares. Este programa no solo ayuda a su hijo/a a mantenerse al día con sus tareas escolares, sino que también garantiza que se registre su asistencia durante su ausencia. Cómo solicitar un estudio independiente a corto plazo El proceso es sencillo, pero requiere un poco de planificación previa. Esto es lo que debes hacer:
Tiempo de preparación del trabajo: Una vez finalizado el contrato, la se cretaría del colegio notificará al profesor de su estudiante, quién preparará las tareas y los materiales necesarios. Tenga en cuenta que esto puede tardar un par de días, así que planifique con antelación y envíe la solicitud con suficiente antelación a su fecha de salida.
Comunícate con la Oficina de tu Escuela: ¡Este es el primer paso! Ponte en contacto con el personal de la oficina de la escuela tan pronto como sepas tus fechas de viaje para comenzar el proceso.
