Our commitment to sustainability
Steel is the most widely recycled material in the world, with 80 million tons recycled annually in North America alone. Steel cast 150 years ago is still part of our lives today. ArcelorMittal Long Products
• We are processing up to 1 million tons of scrap at our facilities every year – vehicle carcasses, unwanted household appliances (washing machines, dryers, stoves, etc.), old tin cans, pieces of steel from demolition sites, worn-out machine parts and all kinds of metal waste from municipal selective recycling pickup or manufacturing plants. • Recycling steel is a vital part of the circular economy, because it allows the loop from production to use to production to be closed, meaning fewer resources are used and less greenhouse gas emitted. • Close to 100% of the materials that enter our scrap recycling and processing centres is recycled or reclaimed. Our efforts do not stop there. We aim to achieve our sustainability objectives through continuous improvement of our environmental performance and dedication. • The Midrex ® process at the reduction plant, where we produce metallized iron, generates only half the greenhouse gas of the traditional blast-furnace steelmaking process. • Our electric arc furnaces run on clean, renewable electricity coming from Quebec's hydropower plants. • Fresh water accounts for a maximum of 15 to 25% our total water requirements. Therefore, we can say that 75 to 85% of the cooling and process water used in our operations circulates in a continuous loop and is constantly recycled. • Every year, ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to various organizations, causes and individuals to support their community initiatives. We want to play an active role in the communities in which we operate and where our employees live. All of our Long Products Canada facilities are certified under ISO 14001. Adhering to this voluntary environmental management standard demonstrates our commitment to minimizing the impact steelmaking has on the environment. Through this standard, our facilities are audited each year for compliance with local and national environmental policies and regulations.
Canada continuously recycles steel in our furnaces to make new steel.
