Superintendent’s Message The school year has gotten off to an amazing start. I was at school sites the first three days of instruction and witnessed excitement and enthusiasm from our students and staff. The smiles and happy faces were contagious. I'd like to give a HUGE shout-out to our Maintenance, Grounds, Facilities and Custodial staff. Their extra effort over the summer to guarantee our school sites were ready for the start of the school year goes beyond expectations. The FM&O and summer custodial departments, overseen by Director David Hooker, are unsung heroes, working long hours over the summer to repair, improve, move (move again) and setup classrooms, offices and school sites. They are not the individuals who get the "pat on the back" or the "knuckles" from students, families and the community as we return to school. They are the employees who stand in the background and allow our schools to return from summer break prepared and ready to support student success. They deserve a very loud "Thank You!" My thanks also go out to the Barstow Police Department. Chief Christopher Kirby, members of his command staff and officers visited each of our schools on the first day of classes, greeted students and walked new students to their classrooms. I am excited to see and be a part of our students' "Lightbulb Moments" during their academic journey this year with BUSD. It is going to be a great year! You should contact the school board when you have concerns or questions about the district’s policies, budget, school programs, or safety issues. It's also a good idea to reach out if you want to participate in public meetings, share ideas, or provide feedback about your child’s school. For specific personal issues, like student discipline or individual school matters, it's often best to first contact the school or district administration. Students from Henderson Elementary presented their Women in History projects to the Board of Trustees during the regular meeting in March 2025. School Site Board Presentations Each month, school sites are invited to showcase their projects, share exciting happenings, and highlight the hard work of their students. These presentations serve as a wonderful reminder of the many achievements and wonderful initiatives happening across Barstow Unified School District. Friends and families are encouraged to attend the board meetings to support and celebrate their students’ accomplishments. Presentations begin promptly at 5:00 p.m., are scheduled to last no more than 10 minutes, and can be viewed live by visiting www.busdk12.com/livestream. Public Comment The board meeting is a business meeting of the board held in a public forum. This is not a town hall meeting with the board. There is time during the meeting to receive public comment from citizens to present problems or questions they feel the board should discuss. Individuals are encouraged to address the full board, not individual Board members. The law prohibits the Board from taking action on items not on the agenda. Request to speak cards should be filled out in advance and presented to the Superintendent's Executive Assistant. Instructions for submitting remote public comment can be found on our website www.busdk12.com under the tab “Board of Trustees.”

BUSD Immigration Policy There has been a lot of news lately detailing undocumented criminal residents being arrested and deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents following President Donald Trump’s Executive Order, issued January 20, 2025. Those news stories have raised questions from our staff and families about what our policy is regarding ICE agents coming to our school sites. Barstow Unified School District (BUSD) Board Policy 5145.13, Response to Immigration Enforcement, provides guidance for district and school administrators and school site staff who may encounter ICE agents. Below are some of the steps District and school staff follow in the event ICE agents visit a campus or District office. ● Existing immigration law, specifically the 1982 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Plyler v. Doe held that undocumented students must be provided with equal access to public education, regardless of immigration status. ● Also, the Fourth Amendment protects against unlawful search and seizure, thereby requiring a judicial warrant for an arrest to take place. In some instances, an ICE agent may present an “administrative warrant,” which is not legally equivalent to a judicial warrant and does NOT require compliance. Only a warrant signed by a judge is legally binding. ● A student’s immigration status is covered under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). Barstow Unified School District does not request or require parents/guardians to provide immigration status when enrolling their child(ren). ● Contact the District Office should ICE agents arrive at your school site. We are here to assist you and can arrange for legal counsel to respond to your school site, if necessary. ● Do NOT obstruct immigration officers, even if you feel they are overstepping their authority. Document their actions by taking pictures or videos, but do NOT obstruct the immigration officers. ● If a student’s parent/guardian is detained or deported, the student is to be released to emergency contacts or an individual with a caregiver's affidavit. Notify the student, emergency contacts and individuals with a caregiver’s affidavit that the student may continue to attend school for as long as they meet residency requirements for our District.

Bus Safety Message From First Student
We here at First Student want to give a warm welcome to all our new and returning parents, guardians and students. As we begin this new school year there are a few items I’d like to take the time to address. First, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Ena Regnier, and I took over as Location Safety Manager at the end of last school year. I’d like to thank everyone for their patience as we and your students have navigated these first couple of weeks to this new year. The first topic to be addressed is loading and unloading of students. This is the most dangerous time for students. So, making sure they are on the correct side to the street prior to the buses arrival or waiting for the driver to escort them across the street is very important. Arriving 5 minutes prior to the buses arrival, as required by the district’s policy, will help ensure that you or your student don’t miss the bus. Next, I’d like to address personal items and eating. Students’ personal items should be left in their bags to ensure that they are not lost, stolen or damaged. Our staff are not responsible for these items. Eating is prohibited due to the potential of choking. We understand that some of our students are on the bus for extended rides; please talk with your student about eating their meals before getting on the bus. Please send extra water with them on these hot days. Our buses are equipped with seat belts and as per state law students are to wear them. Please, help us encourage your students to wear them properly during their bus ride. The Aztecs’ Football team kicked off the season at Capistrano Valley, then faced-off with Serrano. September home games include Sultana (9/12 - Homecoming) and Summit (9/26). Aztec Cross Country runners will participate in meets at Burroughs (9/7) and Silverado (9/17). Barstow High School’s E-Sports Team, the E-ztecs (bottom left and right), begin their season Sept. 4. Additional matches will be played 9/11, 9/18 and 9/25. The E-ztecs will compete in Madden, SSBU, Mario Kart, NBA 2K, Marvel Legends and Minecraft. The Lady Aztecs’ Golf program begins its quest for a second straight DSL title with a match on Tuesday, September 16, at 3 p.m. at Marine Memorial Golf Course. The Lady Aztecs’ Tennis team played matches against Hesperia and Sultana to begin the season. The squad has three matches scheduled in September: Victor Valley (9/10), AAE (9/25), and Silverado (9/30). Matches are played at Barstow Community College.

HAPPENINGS Vaccine Clinics for BUSD Students
San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, is hosting a no-cost vaccination event for school-aged children (grades TK/K-12) who live in or attend school in San Bernardino County. The goal is to make it easier for families to keep their children up to date on immunizations, reduce school absences, support busy parents, and protect the health of students throughout the school year. The clinics will be held on September 3 and September 24, 2025, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Central High School, 405 N. Second Avenue.
Eligibility information:
Child/children must qualify through the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program by being uninsured, Medi-Cal eligible, or American Indian or Alaskan Native.
A parent or guardian is required to accompany children under the age of 18.Please bring a photo ID and your child/children's vaccination record to the appointment.

Despertar el amor por el aprendizaje a través de “Momentos de iluminación” es un objetivo del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Barstow.
Bienvenida de la Superintendente El año escolar ha tenido un comienzo increíble. Estuve en las escuelas los primeros tres días de clases y presencié la emoción y el entusiasmo de nuestros estudiantes y personal. Las sonrisas y las caras felices eran contagiosas. Quiero expresar un enorme reconocimiento a nuestro personal de Mantenimiento, Terrenos, Instalaciones y Conserjería. Su esfuerzo extra durante el verano para garantizar que nuestras escuelas estuvieran listas para el inicio del año escolar supera todas las expectativas. Los departamentos de FM&O y de conserjería de verano, supervisados por el director David Hooker, son héroes anónimos que trabajaron largas horas durante el verano para reparar, mejorar, trasladar (y volver a trasladar) y acondicionar aulas, oficinas y escuelas. No son ellos quienes reciben las palmaditas en la espalda ni las palmaditas en la espalda de los estudiantes, las familias y la comunidad al regresar a clases. En First Student, queremos dar una cálida bienvenida a todos nuestros padres, tutores y estudiantes, tanto nuevos como antiguos. Al comenzar este nuevo año escolar, hay algunos temas que me gustaría abordar. Primero, me gustaría presentarme. Mi nombre es Ena Regnier y asumí el cargo de Gerente de Seguridad de Ubicaciones al final del año escolar pasado. Quisiera agradecerles a todos por su paciencia mientras nosotros y sus estudiantes afrontamos estas primeras semanas de este nuevo año. El primer tema que se abordará es la subida y bajada de los estudiantes. Este es el momento más peligroso para ellos. Por lo tanto, es fundamental asegurarse de que estén en el lado correcto de la calle antes de la llegada del autobús o de esperar a que el conductor los acompañe al otro lado. Entendemos que algunos de nuestros estudiantes viajan en autobús durante largos trayectos; por favor, hablen con su estudiante sobre cómo comer antes de subir al autobús. Por favor, envíenles agua extra en estos días calurosos. Nuestros autobuses están equipados con cinturones de seguridad y, según la ley estatal, los estudiantes deben usarlos. El equipo de voleibol Lady Aztecs de la preparatoria Barstow (centro izquierda y derecha) comenzó la temporada 2025 decidida a ganar de nuevo el título de la Desert Sky League (DSL) y llegar a los playoffs de voleibol CIF-SS. Los partidos en casa en septiembre incluyen Oak Hills (3/9), Silverado (16/9), Granite Hills (18/9) y Victor Valley (25/9). El equipo de fútbol americano de las Aztecas comenzó la temporada en Capistrano Valley y luego se enfrentó a Serrano. SEPTIEMBRE 2025 Página 7 Qué está SUCEDIENDO Clínicas de vacunación para estudiantes del BUSD El Departamento de Salud Pública del Condado de San Bernardino organiza un evento de vacunación gratuito para niños en edad escolar (desde preescolar hasta 12.º grado) que viven o asisten a escuelas en el Condado de San BARSTOW UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Bernardino. El objetivo es facilitar que las familias mantengan a sus hijos al día con sus vacunas, reducir el ausentismo escolar, apoyar a los padres ocupados y proteger la salud de los estudiantes durante todo el año escolar. Las clínicas se llevarán a cabo el 3 y el 24 de septiembre de 2025, de 13:30 a 16:30 h, en la Escuela Secundaria Central, ubicada en 405 N. Second Avenue.
