APRIL 2026 NEW ON NAXOS Alexander Konstantinovich GLAZUNOV (1865–1936) Complete String Quartets, Vol. 1 String Quartets Nos. 1, 2 and 3 ‘Slavyanskiy’ Tippett Quartet Alexander Glazunov’s seven string quartets extend over the entirety of his composing career and are equal in significance to his symphonies. Fused with nationalist sentiment and Classical discipline the First String Quartet secured the Glinka Prize for the teenage composer in 1884. The advances in expressive range and formal integration in the Second Quartet include a rapturous slow movement considered a highlight of his earlier output, while the Third Quartet has become known as ‘The Slavonic’ for its evocative folk- music character. Key features: • This is the first volume of a complete edition of Glazunov’s string quartets with the excellent Tippett Quartet, who are veterans of numerous acclaimed complete editions of quartets by composers such as Erich Korngold (Naxos 8.574438), named as one of The Times (UK) Ten Best Classical Albums of the Year in 2023, and Henryk Górecki (8.573919 and 8.574110) in recordings ‘deserving of the very highest recommendation’ ( Gramophone ). • Glazunov was a key figure in giving shape to Russian national character in the late 19th century and was influential on 20th- century composers such as Stravinsky. Even with his imposing reputation his works were regarded by the likes of Shostakovich as old-fashioned, but his popularity has endured beyond modernism and our appreciation of his music can only be enhanced through top notch new recordings such as those of the Tippett Quartet.

Kip WINGER (b. 1961) Symphony of the Returning Light Violin Concerto “In the Language of Flowers” * Peter Otto, Violin * Nashville Symphony • Giancarlo Guerrero Kip Winger is a genre-bridging composer with a long and successful career in rock music. His celebrated ballet score Conversations with Nijinsky led conductor Giancarlo Guerrero to commission the two works on this album. Weaving four floriographical meanings into the musical arc, In the Language of Flowers is a violin concerto that celebrates a love story “no words could adequately express.” Symphony of the Returning Light sits in the tradition of autobiographical fantasies stretching back to Berlioz. The symphony incorporates the use of Morse code rhythms, and is centered around the theme of atonement. Key features: • These are all world premiere recordings composed by multi- platinum rock music and GRAMMY-nominated classical composer, Kip Winger. Conducted by six-time GRAMMY winner Giancarlo Guerrero, performed by 14-time GRAMMY Award winner, Nashville Symphony , and produced by ten-time GRAMMY winner Tim Handley. • ‘Winger’s musical pedigree was practically unmatched in 1980s metal … the band crafted a debut album that combined hard-pop melodies with plenty of proggy, technically dazzling instrumental work.’ ( Rolling Stone Magazine ) • Kip Winger played bass with Alice Cooper from 1985 to 1987, and performed and recorded with Alan Parsons, Roger Daltrey and Bob Dylan.

Giancarlo Guerrero and the Nashville Symphony

‘The Cornet Concerto by Brad Warnaar is a bold and highly original work… The performance is virtuosic and sparkling, featuring an exceptional Costa Rican soloist, José Sibaja… Higdon has said that working with brass players is great because these musicians often spread a contagious joy. You can hear that in her virtuosic and playful concerto, which is performed magnificently.’ – Pizzicato ‘Armed with the 3,568 pipes of the concert organ at Nashville’s Laura Turner Concert Hall, the excellent Paul Jacobs gives a delightful performance, vigorously supported by Giancarlo Guerrero’s brightly polished Nashville Symphony, stripped of woodwinds in Parker’s scoring – something that only makes the organ’s tones stand out with extra clarity.’ – BBC Music Magazine

‘The Nashville musicians meet the score’s [ My Father Knew Charles Ives ] many demands head-on, including the challenging if highly idiomatic wind parts, achieving an atmospheric soundscape both poignant and exhilarating… Both the pairing of these two particular works and their singular performances make this a welcome addition to any Adams collection.’ – Gramophone

‘Giancarlo Guerrero is an able accompanist, and the Nashville Symphony play beautifully for him.’ – Gramophone

Giya Kancheli, one of Georgia’s most eminent composers, became increasingly famous after the advent of glasnost in the Soviet Union, when his works, not least his seven symphonies, were heard internationally. Around the year 2000 Kancheli shifted away from the opulence of these pieces and moved towards a more restrained, introspective vein, which is exemplified by the three works on this album. Elements of folk and traditional music can be glimpsed in the abstract Ex contrario , while Middelheim is striking for its overlapping succession of episodes. Tsutisopeli was Kancheli’s final score. Key features: • At the age of ten, violinist Svetlana Makarova won First Prize at the Moscow International Youth Tchaikovsky Competition. In 2008 she was invited by conductor Lorin Maazel to join the orchestra of Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofía, Spain. • Cellist Jing Zhao has performed with numerous prestigious conductors such as Yuri Bashmet, Myung-whun Chung, Jean Fournet, Eliahu Inbal, Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, Lorin Maazel, Ricardo Muti, Andris Nelsons, Seiji Ozawa, Mikhail Pletnev, Muhai Tang, and Jaap van Zweden, among others. ‘Grigorian really does have a special way with Tchaikovsky’s heroines… and here exudes the charisma essential to bring Kuma to life, her nuanced acting allied to a voice that encompasses both strength and fragility… The rest of the cast is uniformly strong. Young Canadian baritone Iain MacNeil sings with great vocal warmth as Nikita… Claudia Mahnke’s dark mezzo makes for a striking Princess.’ – Gramophone

‘Leading the pack is the resonant baritone of Vladislav Sulimsky. He possesses a solid tonal core throughout his range and he shades Tchaikovsky’s music by colouring his voice expressively… Another artist of promise is the soprano Olesya Golovneva who even manages to sing while dancing en pointe . Her voice is a pleasing lyric soprano with hints of dark colours and the suggestion of greater reserves of power.’ – MusicWeb International

Joachim Raff moved in circles that included Franz Liszt and Robert Schumann, and he ultimately became one of the best-known German composers of his day. Of Raff’s six stage works Dame Kobold (‘The Phantom Lady’) was the first of a series of comic operas that anticipated later trends, moving away from Wagnerian pathos and looking back to the levity of Rossini. Admired for its utterly gorgeous musical setting, the opera is notable for a disarmingly simple yet fast- paced plot, bewitching solos and elegantly flowing melodies, and a deftly responsive marriage of language and music. Key features: • This world premiere recording of Joachim Raff’s comic opera Dame Kobold is a significant coup and a highlight of our operatic recordings in 2026. Raff was a prolific composer and a leading figure in German music during the 19th century, but his operas were overshadowed by those of Wagner and his works are still being rediscovered today. • This recording joins our release in 2024 of Raff’s final opera Die Eifersüchtigen (8.660561-62), regarded as ‘a beautifully conceived look back at opera buffa from the late romantic era’ by MusicWeb International . • The compact but superb cast of Dame Kobold is led by baritone Matthias Lika (Don Juan), who was awarded First Prize in the concert category at the National Singing Competition in Berlin in December 2024, and soprano Lara Rieken (Donna Angela), winner of the National Singing Competition 2022, the 5th Vienna International Music Competition and the competition of the Fritz Wunderlich Society 2023.

APRIL 2026 NEW ON NAXOS Wenzel Thomas MATIEGKA (1773–1830) Complete Guitar Sonatas, Vol. 1 Grande Sonates Nos. 1 and 2 Sonate, Op. 23 Sonate progressive, Op. 17 Dragoş Ilie, Guitar A native of Bohemia, Wenzel Thomas Matiegka was a contemporary of Beethoven and a celebrated guitarist. His reputation was established after settling in Vienna where he became accepted in musical circles that included Schubert. Matiegka’s works reflect the influence of Mozart and Haydn, while exploring the virtuoso possibilities of the guitar by blending lyrical serenity with refreshing good humour and exhilarating technique. Key features: • This is the first volume of what will be a complete edition of Wenzel Thomas Matiegka’s guitar sonatas on two discs. Matiegka is a composer whose work is known and highly respected by a few serious guitar aficionados, but whose music has been overshadowed by the popularity of composers such as Fernando Sor and Mauro Giuliani. • Matiegka is considered to be one of the foremost exponents of the flourishing Viennese guitar school of the early 1800s, and was certainly an influential figure in the fashionable guitar scene of his day. Leading 20th-century concert guitarists such as Andrés Segovia, Julian Bream and John Williams seem not to have had access to Matiegka’s compositions, and as a result the re-evaluation of his qualities is still ongoing. The works selected for this recording certainly have many of the unique and most interesting features of guitar compositions in Matiegka’s era, from lyrically expressive movements to spectacular virtuosic romps.

‘The arrangements themselves are beautiful, maximising the use of various effects such as palm muting and artificial harmonics to evoke not just the sounds of the orchestra but the sights and smells of the Spanish campo. The performances, too, are beautiful.’ – Gramophone

‘Trent’s performance is brilliant, handling the complex technical and musical challenges with aplomb, making the guitar a transparent interpreter of these emotions… This recording is an example of solid, generally understandable contemporary compositions that deserve to be included in the classical guitar’s repertoire – and brought to us by a world-class performer.’ – American Record Guide
