PASTORAL CARE Julius House

In Term 4, we welcomed Josh Kim into the Julius community as Deputy Housemaster, as part of his transition to Housemaster in 2025. When I announced his appointment in House Assembly, there was genuine delight from the boys. Josh brings the perfect blend of skills, and I am very comfortable leaving Julius House in his safe hands. Thank you, too, to our wonderful mentors for their work with our boys. Shelly, Logan, Robert, Rob, Charlotte, and Liz have been instrumental in building relationships with the boys while supporting and encouraging them to be the best they can. Thank you for your patience, wisdom, and outstanding contribution to the young men entrusted to us. And congratulations to Charlotte following her appointment as Jacobs Deputy Housemaster. You will be wonderful in this role. I also want to acknowledge the hard work, energy, and mana of our Head of House, Rahal Pathirana, and his Deputies, Sam and Tadhg, and the rest of the Year 13 cohort. You have been a wonderful group of young men to work alongside. It was with immense pride that I watched you walk out of the Chapel following the Leavers’ Service – courageous, intelligent, and confident young men striding towards a bright future. You have been wonderful role models in the House and should be proud of your efforts in winning several major House competitions this year. For me, the highlights were winning House Music and House Plays, as well as the House haka competition. For the first time, all the Julius teachers had a cameo in the House Play, in a scene written by Hugo

Sudell, the creative force behind the work. Superbly directed by Raziel Zhao, all the Year 13s and many boys from across the year groups had a ball, and we won more than half the prizes. The overall House Music win was also thoroughly deserved, with the House choir, the backing band, and the small group all claiming spots on the podium, and Sam Hales delivering a memorable performance as conductor. Arranged by Charlie Wood, the small group’s version of Africa by Toto was simply stunning, with a huge finale – #veryproudhousemaster! The House haka win was another highlight. This year, the standard across the Houses was vastly improved, and, in the end, our win came down to the quality of our leaders – Kiki Anglem, Zinzan Bondarenko-Leatua, and our main kaea, Lochie Horne. Congratulations also to those boys who represented the House in a variety of sports and activities. This year, we gave out plenty of awards for House Colours. While we did not win the overall House Trophy, we came very close. More importantly, we worked together to achieve our goals and became closer, and more supportive of each other. We discovered a lot about life and facing challenges outside our comfort zones. I wish Josh Kim, Head of House David Wayne, and Deputies Lochie Horne and Benson Geng-Wang, and all the Julius boys, the very best for 2025. I am confident that Julius House is in wonderful hands and in great heart, and I look forward to seeing the continued pursuit of excellence. He Waka Eke Noa

Thank you to all those students, parents, staff, and friends who have supported me to build the best House we can, to support the boys coming through as best we can. It has been an honour, and I will look back on my ‘Julius years’ with fondness and warmth. Thank you particularly to the Deputy Housemasters. Matua Keri Campbell has been wonderful in the role. It was with genuine sadness that myself and the boys farewelled Matua and supported his move to Flower’s House. Your new community is fortunate to have you, and you will always have a special place in our hearts and minds. Nga¯ mihi nui ki a koe, e hoa.
