PASTORAL CARE Rolleston House
Athletics Day For the first time, Athletics Day was held at Ngaˉ Puna Wai because of construction work on Upper West. On 23 February, the whole school made its way to the track and set up on the embankment for the day. The camaraderie among the Rolleston House boys was great to see. As well as some notable individual achievements, Rolleston House won the Christ's College House Athletics Cup sponsored by Canterbury International House for the Non-Championship title – an awesome reflection of the high levels of participation and enthusiasm. Jake Boyd won the CC 80 Yard Hurdles U14 Cup, the WS, TGB and AS Armitage Prize for Long Jump, the Christ's College Medal for Javelin, the Christ's College Medal for Shot Put and the Christ's College Medal for Discus Throw. He also took home the RC Grigg Cup and Prize and Rowberry Medal for the U14 Championship. Dylan Jackson won the A Melville Jameson's Cup for the 80m hurdles, and Riley Diver won the AH Gould Cup for Pole Vault.
Christ’s College Academic Awards In early March, the school community recognised the top- achieving students from 2023 at the Academic Awards Assembly. Rolleston House was incredibly proud of Harry Beaglehole and Seann Zhao, who received Gold Ties for being among the top five scholars in 2023, and Harry Vaughan and Saleh Ameen, who received Gold Buttons for their high achievement in 2022 and 2023. Recognising their exceptional academic effort and dedication in front of the school community was a proud moment for the House. INTERHOUSE EVENTS Swimming Sports The Christ’s College Swimming Championships were held on 15 February, and, as always, an impressive number of students were willing to get involved. The House 10 relays were a highlight, with plenty of cheering poolside, and there were some outstanding individual results. • Riley Miller (U14) – 3rd 50m backstroke, 6th 50m breaststroke, 6th 100m freestyle • Jake Boyd (Junior) – 1st 50m breaststroke, 1st 50m backstroke, 2nd 50m butterfly, 2nd 100m individual medley, 2nd 100m freestyle, 2nd 50m freestyle, 3rd 200m freestyle • George Zhang (Senior) – 2nd 50m butterfly, 3rd 200m individual medley, 1st 100m backstroke, 4th 100m breaststroke, 1st 100m freestyle • Charlie de Costobadie (Intermediate) – 6th 100m backstroke, 8th 100m breaststroke • Charlie Frost (Intermediate) – 10th 100m breaststroke
The day started with a Chapel service filled with metaphors of new shoes and carabiner clips, followed by some icebreakers. The Year 13 boys then joined us for a classic Rolleston House barbecue and courtyard games. After getting to know each other, learning the door codes, and finding a locker, the 25-strong group moved on to Laser Strike to battle it out. Throughout the day, the seniors demonstrated the inclusive nature of the Rolleston community and supported the new arrivals. Friendships were already forming among the young group. Over the first few days, it was great to see the other Year groups return to the House. The individual mentor meetings were a moment to reconnect, and it was good to hear the aspirations and goals for the year ahead and their successes during the holidays. Rolleston House Leadership Council In 2024, we established the Rolleston House Leadership Council, led by Harry Vaughan and Aaron Kwak. The council goal was to involve boys from different years in leading the House and sharing their ideas for activities and events that could strengthen the Rolleston culture. The council also provided an avenue for students to raise issues or share their perspectives. To foster connection and participation, the council ran an inter-mentor group competition, which began in Term 2 with a multisport event and a play. It was pleasing to see such strong engagement as the council developed. Its positive impact on Rolleston House is encouraging.
