PASTORAL CARE School House
Term 3 soon rolled around and it was time for the annual REACTION House Plays. With only five school weeks separating House Music and House Plays, it left the boys with little time to produce, cast, direct, and rehearse their play. This year, the boys opted for Scooby-Doo . To bring this play to life, Oliver Biggs took it on himself to rewrite the script. The School House cast did a tremendous job, taking the audience along for a laugh-a-minute ride, not to mention the amazing props. School House won several awards, including the People's Choice award – best play on Thursday night; and acting awards for both Harry Hanson and Oliver Biggs and a director's award for Oscar Stanley. Thank you to the Year 13s and, in particular, Harry and Oliver, who helped to put this great play together. A special thanks to Claire Nicolson for her personal support and guidance in the final week of the play. We ended the term with two interhouse events, the House haka and the cross country. The House haka is popular with all the boys and they really showed their commitment. After several coaching sessions, the House delivered a very credible effort but, unfortunately, did not place. A special thanks to Harry Hansen, Wills Ockwell, and Benji Nation for helping to run this event, and to Benji for leading the haka. Kia Kaha Benji, this is not an easy job. The boys also represented the House well in the cross country, with special mentions going to Zeb Jarvis for finishing in the U14 top 10, and Benji Nation for placing 12th in the senior grade. Well done boys. Term 4 presented the boys with a few more opportunities to represent the House. The seniors showed their strength in the tug of war on Upper. As the defending champions, the boys were keen to impress, winning all contests 2–0 and comfortably defeating Flower’s House again in the final. It was great to welcome our Year 9 boys into the House with the traditional lunch in our backyard. It was also lovely to see everyone back together. On the last Sunday of January, we welcomed our Year 9s and their families. Leo Acland, Thomas Carr, Saxon Foggo, George Grigg, Jake Hallenstein, Jack Hill, Zeb Jarvis, Cooper Ward, Ollie Wells, Harry Whyte, and Andrew Wright were ready and eager to take on the challenges and adventures of moving up to a secondary school and boarding. Within minutes, it was great to see the unique personalities, and the brotherhood start. These boys have bonded tightly, making a great start and with the best yet to come. We also welcomed Year 10 student Blake Derig from Marlborough Boys' College. It was amazing to see how quickly he settled into House life and soon became a true School House man. The first major event on the School House calendar was Athletics Day. This year was going to be different, with College hosting the event off- site for the first time at Ngaˉ Puna Wai. Unlike other years, with Upper out of action, we were unable to run the preliminarily heats. Instead, boys had to be nominated to compete in the various events, with the allocation task falling to Harry
Hanson and Jack Baker-Sherman. To complicate matters, each event was limited to set numbers. To the credit of Harry and Jack, they worked tirelessly to ensure that ALL the boys in the House could compete in at least two events on the day. It was good to see the efforts on the day and several key results. In Term 2, we celebrated the return of the Mother’s Day High Tea. It is wonderful way to acknowledge all the School House mothers and host everyone in the House library. It is also an opportunity to thank the mums for all they do for their sons. The boys set up the library and served their mothers tea and coffee as they sat back, relaxed, and enjoyed the company. Next up was the House Shoot. A huge thank you to Annie and Alastair Studholme for opening up their home and farm to host this wonderful event. With fine weather, a wonderful day was had by all. Fergus McCone won the overall best award and the parents again defeated the boys in the final shoot-off. Our final Term 2 event was the Parents’ Association House Music Festival, with School uniting to sing Don’t look Back in Anger by Oasis. Thank you to the School backing band who did a wonderful job learning the many parts to this song. Well done Geordie Pavey, Will Richards, Harry Hansen, and Oliver Biggs. A special mention must also be made of our own Dom Botherway, who beautifully brought the role of ‘Sally’ to life. Finally, a big thank you to the Year 13s and, in particular, Harry and Oliver who organised and ran the House singing beautifully, and congratulations to Hugo Helmore for winning best conductor.
