Josh Shannahan and Jack Howard came 9th and 6th, respectively, in the U16 run. In the open 3000m walk, Ollie Du Toit came a very respectable 5th, but Marcello Ferguson, with all of two weeks’ training, obliterated the rest of the field to win his race by a full
minute. In other events, Ihaka Cate dominated the high jump and did very well in the triple and long jumps, and George Thorp, Noah Madgwick, Ahmed Mohammed, Joss Langman, Marcello Ferguson, and Armani Lemalu all secured top-three placings. A hat tip must
also go to Finlay Sharpe, Samuel Belcher, and Jackson Grace, who carried the hopes of the House in multiple track events. In the annual cross-country race, Noah Madgwick and Sam Coles gained top-10 finishes in the U14 event, with George Thorp and Will Gardiner finishing in the top 20. The other year groups performed well, too, with Eli Clarkson, Liam Singer, and Mattias Holmsen picking up valuable House points in the U15 race. Meanwhile, Marcello Ferguson took 3rd place in the U16 grade and, in the senior race, Samuel Belcher, Ihaka Cate, and Alf Markham all finished in the top 20. House Music House Music was the pinnacle of the boys’ interhouse efforts in Term 2 and, this year, George Grace was the one to apply his diplomacy skills to the task of getting the Year 13s to agree on a song. This was easier said than done, and after mutinous rumblings were detected following
the first suggestion – Let it Go from Frozen – Ollie Du Toit stepped up to assist George in choosing a more ‘accessible’ song for your average teenage boy to sing. They settled on Hooked on a Feeling and the rest, as they say, is history. The boys practised hard over several weeks under the keen guidance of Ollie, George, Jack Kennedy, and other seniors running security to prevent escapees. It paid off, as the moment the boys unleashed the first line of the song in the Town Hall, anyone paying attention knew they had it in the bag. The small vocal group of James Burt (arranger), Alex Johnston, Ollie Du Toit, and Marcello Ferguson also delivered an excellent performance, and the instrumental group of James Burt (composer and saxophone), Finlay Sharpe (saxophone), Max Chi (piano), Samuel Belcher (drums), Marcello Ferguson (trumpet), and Eli Clarkson (double bass) did similarly well. Both came 3rd in their
respective competitions, and all the boys deserve credit for stepping up to represent the House in such a big event. REACTION House Plays Like House Music, the House Play is a major event on the calendar. The audience could have been forgiven some unease when they read that Somes would perform a play about a mass shooting in a theatre. However, once the boys hit the stage, everyone in the Hall was treated to an amusing but very professional performance. George Grace did a great job sending himself up as the tragic, tortured actor while other characters decided who to send on stage to be shot by a slightly psychopathic-looking Sam Bennett. Matthew Flint in a cocktail dress was a highlight, and Alex Johnston was splendid as the besuited ‘calming influence’. It was one of the best-acted plays on the night, and fully deserved 2nd place overall and a Best Director award for James Burt.
Christ’s College interhouse reading competition. As in 2023, Eli Clarkson set the tone with an initially insatiable appetite for books, but he was outdone by Year 9 Hugh Carran, who amassed enough points that, had he been his own House, he would have come in 6th place. The final announcement of Somes’ victory was therefore not surprising. In the chess competition, Tom Eyre-Walker, Alex Johnston, James Burt, Bill Li, Sean Zhang, and Sam Bennett all represented the House, and the first four of those defeated a tenacious Jacobs team in the final. The match went to the top board, where Bill Li took the win, beating Jacobs captain Angus Whitteker. In the interhouse haka competition, Armani Lemalu, Ihaka and Tawhiri Cate, Alf Markham, and Hoani Ifopo- Togia led the House practices very well. It came together on the day, with Tawhiri and Armani leading
