GROUPS Chess
The B Team – featuring Jake Hayes (Board 1), James Burt (2), George Simonsohn (3), and Finlay Benson (4) – faced a more challenging year. While the team was unable to replicate the success of 2023, the boys played with determination, making the most of their valuable experience. The inclusion of developing players was a highlight, as they gained insight into the competitive chess scene. The team showed resilience and sportsmanship throughout the season. Individually, College players continued to shine. In the individual version of the South Island Championships – held annually in Term 3 – Bill Li dominated the Year 11 division, while Arthur Woolhouse triumphed in the Year 13 section. Further notable achievements came from Augustus Elworthy, Jack Gorrie, Cody Rollinson, and Guy Boissard, who all performed admirably, showing great skill and dedication in their respective year groups. The season closed with the awarding of Honours Ties for consistently exceptional gameplay and service to College chess. Bill Li, Arthur Woolhouse, and Angus Whitteker were recognised for their remarkable achievements on the chessboard and their invaluable contributions to the club. The ongoing support of Jared Chin has been instrumental in the club’s success. His dedication to helping players of all abilities, particularly during Thursday lunchtimes, has been invaluable. His time, expertise, and enthusiasm
continue to inspire our players, and we are grateful for his continued involvement. As we look to 2025, the Chess Club remains committed to building on its achievements and inspiring a new generation of players.
The College Chess Club has had another great year, building on the successes of previous seasons while fostering a love of the game among all player levels. With a commitment to teamwork, sportsmanship, and individual improvement, the club is stronger, both in spirit and performance. A feature of the club’s success has been the ladder system. It is a popular and effective part of our culture. It encourages frequent participation, with players keen to improve their
rankings while developing skills. Additionally, we have exposed players to a wider variety of opening strategies. As we move into the next season, this will remain a focus, ensuring that players develop more well-rounded repertoires and improve their overall game. The A Team – featuring Bill Li (Board 1), Arthur Woolhouse (2), Angus Whitteker (3), and Alex Fulton (4) – continues to dominate. Alex’s promotion to Board 4 following his strong 2023 season
highlights the club’s commitment to recognising and rewarding talent. The team’s hard work and exceptional skills culminated in a second consecutive victory at the South Island Interschools Championships, and an invitation to the National Championships, held at Wellington College during the Term 3 holidays. Unfortunately, with many team members joining the European Choir Tour, College was unable to attend. However, we look forward to a return in 2025.
