‘floating team’ enabled boys to compete when they were available. Many Year 11 students moved into the senior rounds this year. Transitioning into the senior competition can be challenging, but it is a valuable opportunity for growth and development as boys refine their skills and strategies and become

stronger debaters. There was also a lot of interest from Year 9 students and some

familiar and new Year 10 faces. Thanks to coaching sessions and feedback from adjudicators, all the teams made great strides in better understanding debating structures and key skills. Beyond the weekly rounds, the Canterbury Schools’ Debating Council also organises the Regional Debating Championships for senior students and the Junior Debating Championships. Three teams competed in the senior competition, but were unable to make the break. The juniors narrowly missed out on the break, finishing 5th on speaker points. Other events included the impromptu competition,

House debating remains a hotly contested fixture on the College calendar. Seniors debate in Term 2 and juniors step up in Term 3. This year’s senior round was affected by defaulting teams causing qualification issues for the semi-finals, prompting a rules rewrite to avoid future issues. Rolleston House won the senior House debating for the second year in a row. Despite its best efforts, it

was unable to replicate that success at the junior level, decisively won by

A highlight of the debating calendar is the weekly competition run by the Canterbury Schools’ Debating Council from Terms 1–3. It brings together schools from across Christchurch, offering teams the chance to compete and forge new connections.

Senior A was a ‘floating team’ of Years 12–13 students so that we could accommodate school commitments. Oscar Compton-Moen, Noah Yee, Oliver Biggs, and Aaron Kwak all featured in interschool rounds and other fixtures. While the team sometimes lacked cohesion, the
