CULTURE Theatresports

Williams, Harrison Tapper, and Hugo Bush put in a valiant effort. From trying to clean an oven in Word At A Time Story , to speeding through a fishing trip for Half Life , through to a rambunctious Genre Rollercoaster , where they found themselves hopping on an elaborate adventure full of crazy kangaroos. However, their creativity and flair could not stop Cashmere, leaving College in 2nd place, one point behind. The Year 10 team was also thwarted, even with last year’s junior competition winner, Cole Moffatt, in the ranks. Having just completed a successful run of Puffs , Cole, Alex Johnstone, Gus Elworthy, Ollie Trollip, Toby Sharr, and Harry MacKenzie-Rickards endeavoured to entertain the audience with a myriad of games. Speak in One Voice , about a Disney expert, was met with guffaws and thrust the team into the lead alongside Medbury School. However, Christchurch Girls’ High School (CGHS) went ahead after the choice round where our Half Life was not as exciting as that team’s Skydiving Slideshow . Finally, the boys took up the dangerous challenge of Song Cue but could not reclaim the half-point lead of CGHS. On the bright side, Cole was individually celebrated by the Court Jesters with a Rising Star Award for embodying the spirit of innovation, teamwork, and potential. That defines the essence of Junior Theatresports, earning our school a Theatresports workshop with a Court Jester next year. With such passion, perseverance, and joy, we have much to celebrate. Our theatresports legacy thrives thanks to the commitment of these energetic improvisers, and, of course, their coaches, Charlie Wood and Shannon Small. We look forward to 2025. Theatresports is alive and thriving at Christ’s College, with four talented teams across all year levels showcasing their exceptional improvising abilities through competitive game. One senior team went on to The Court Theatre finals, while both junior teams were bested in their heats by only half a point. SENIOR COMPETITION With two dynamic and experienced senior teams performing this year, we were virtually guaranteed a spot in The Court Theatre finals. Our Senior A team featured the theatrical storytelling talents of several Year 11 students – experienced veterans of last year’s winning junior team Charlie Wood and James Melhuish, alongside Bill Cross and first-time competitors Marcello Ferguson and Felipe Felitti- Duter. Sadly, despite their improv prowess, they did not advance beyond the heats, but a hilarious time was had by all. Our Senior B team – bursting with the vitality of daring and dynamic Year 12 players – featured co-captains Alex Johnston and Angus Vincent, the ever-unpredictable Charlie Doutch, and newcomers Sam Bennett and Jack Simpson, alongside the intellect and experience of Year 13 student James Burt. They strong-armed their way to a

hard-earned victory by only half a point in the heats. Playing on the main stage of The Court Theatre to a raucous audience, College found itself facing some of Christchurch’s finest improv teams without the genius of Jack. After a less-than-brilliant score for Yes And Experts in the blind round, the boys were left to try and gain ground on 2023 champion Papanui High School, and Cashmere High School. Some brilliant decisions in the choice round with a game of Actor’s Nightmare using the play Dracula took College ahead of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School and back in the game. The challenge round lived up to its name and not even a ridiculous game of Blind Dub could close the gap between us and Christchurch Girls’ High School. While College delivered an animated performance, it was not enough to overcome Cashmere, who took home the trophy. Both senior teams performed valiantly and our leavers should be exceedingly proud of their accomplishments. Thank you to Shannon Small for coaching the senior teams this year. JUNIOR COMPETITION In the junior heats, the Year 9 team of Conor Ruane, Charlie Sara, Matthew
