With Upper out of commission, it led to a lot of extra travel to train at Nga¯ Puna Wai in Term 1. In Term 4, the throws cage was not completed at College, so the trips to Nga¯ Puna Wai continued. It meant sacrifices in terms of travelling and time for coaches, athletes, and parents. However, our results showed that we had significant success in many events. We enjoyed returning to our home training ground on Upper in Term 4 and looked forward to the new throwing cage. I want to acknowledge the hard work of all the staff, coaches, and many parents who have made our venue change work. That level of commitment has helped to enable our success. On behalf of our athletes, thank you for your hard work. “We don’t play athletics – we DO athletics.” Graeme Christey MiC Athletics

National Secondary School Athletics Championships and Road Race Timaru, 8–10 December Due to injuries and various end-of- year school functions, a smaller team than usual travelled to this event. However, the boys performed well, with many achieving PBs, making finals, and even a few podium spots, along with a junior national record. One of the biggest achievements for an athlete is peaking for a PB at a championship event. The weather was excellent for a well-run competition. Special thanks to Dr Briar Wait for planning and logistics; Matt Thatcher for team management and coaching; coaches Bev Peterson, Tom Turner, and Yo-Ahn Lin for supporting the boys and helping with team management; and the parents and College supporters. Results Special mentions must be made of the following athletes. Otto Church won the junior pole vault with a 3.56m PB, setting a national record. He was also 6th in the 1500m semi-final but suffered an injury in the race and withdrew from the junior road race Harrison Laing ran an outstanding 400m 49.84sec PB in the semi-final to finish with a 5th place ranking.
