BADMINTON 2024

MiC: Steve Everingham While 2024 was not a stellar season for College teams, the A team finished 4th in the very tough Premier Boys A Grade, fighting hard for every point. None of the teams secured a top-three spot in their grades. However, it was very rewarding to see Kennedy Xiao finish runner-up in the highly competitive Canterbury Championships singles competition. Kennedy – along with the promising Simon Lai – also won silver in the doubles. It was a joy to be able to train at College this year, enabling more time
on the court instead of travelling to Badminton Hall. College had been commuting for training since the 2011 earthquakes. College also had the pleasure of hosting home games in the Hickman Gymnasium in Upper West, with up to four of the six school teams enjoying the new home courts. This was a welcome change from the demand for taxis and the mass team exodus on busy Wednesday afternoons. Players welcomed our new coach and relished being able to play at home, leading to a boost in skills and general competitiveness. While many grades appeared to have a very wide range
of player skill levels, most teams had some success. We look forward to better results next season, given our practice and coaching opportunities. Thank you to Anna Johnston for her able and kind assistance with practice sessions and managing teams playing across the city. Steven Everingham MiC Badminton
