Boys compete in the Canterbury Secondary Schools (SS) Clay Target Shooting competition, as well as the South Island, North Island, and New Zealand Secondary Schools competitions. REPRESENTATIVES Thomas Saunders – Canterbury Secondary Schools Fish & Game Regional Team Hugo Helmore – South Island three- person Secondary Schools Skeet Team Oliver Skene – New Zealand Junior Mackintosh Points Team, who won the international competition Harry Wilson – South Island Junior Skeet Team 2024 SEASON In 2024, 21 boys took clay target shooting as a full-time winter sport. All boys competed in Secondary School (SS), club, and NZCTA competitions. This year, the shooting team completed all six rounds of the CSS shooting circuit, travelled to Hamilton for the NISS Championships, and competed in the SISS Championships and NZSS Championships in Canterbury. In the Canterbury competition, team members regularly achieved top- three places and PBs throughout the season. The Points Score teams were competitive but hampered in
the quest for overall season success with members unavailable at a critical point in the competition. Kieran Christey won the Canterbury Secondary Schools High Overall Skeet Cup for the season. The NISS Championships were held in Hamilton on 5 July 2024, with 166 competitors from more than 30 schools competing. Nine members of the College team travelled north and competed well on the unfamiliar shooting grounds. Harry Wilson won the 2024 NISS High Overall Skeet Champion title, as well as finishing 1st in the junior single barrel and 3rd in the junior single rise. Kieran was 2nd in the skeet while the two-person team of Will Pearson and Kieran won the NISS Skeet Shield. The College five-person points score team of Hugo Helmore, Kieran, Harry, Harrison Johnstone, and Oliver Skene won the NI Points Score Team event with an impressive 279/300. PBs were shot by Harry, Oliver, and George Dale. The SISS and NZSS Championships were held in Canterbury from 28–30 September 2024, with about 305 students competing from more than 60 schools. A record 20 College team members competed in the event, with seven boys achieving PBs. In the SISS championships (28 September), Angus Maxwell was 2nd in the junior single barrel and Harry 3rd in the junior single rise. Hugo was 9th in the Single Rise Trophy match. In the SISS Skeet Championships, the two-person team of Hugo and Harry won the SISS Skeet Shield and Hugo was 2nd overall in the individual skeet competition. In the NZSS Championships, Oliver was 8th overall in the Single Rise
Trophy match. In the NZSS skeet competition, Hugo was 2nd overall and the two-person team of Hugo and Harry was 2nd in the NZSS skeet team competition. Hugo was selected for the SI skeet team that won the Island Championships against the NI. Based on his scores for the SI and NZ Championships, Thomas Saunders was selected for the Canterbury Regional DTL team, who shot against the other NZ regions. Throughout the year, College shooters also competed in non-school events, including clubs, provincial, and district championships. These NZCTA competitions are by grade and include junior (U18) categories. Oliver, Harrison, Harry, and Kieran competed in the National DTL Championships in Christchurch in March. This was an open NZCTA competition. Harry won the C Grade single rise, Harrison won the B Grade single barrel and was HOA Junior in the 45 target triples and 2nd (B Grade) in the handicap by distance. Oliver had numerous top-three placings in the C Grade and, based on his score in the three-day Mackintosh events, was selected for the NZ Junior Mackintosh team. It competed in a postal shoot against Australia, Canada, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, and South Africa. The team won the event for the first time since 2009. In the SI Open Skeet Championships Will Pearson was 1st in the C Grade doubles and Harry was 2nd in the C Grade 12g. Chris Graham MiC Clay Target Shooting
