Christ’s College had another strong year in cricket. Our 1st XI made the Gillette Cup Final and performed very well in the two-day and one- day competitions. College beat the Gillette Cup winner twice in the regular season, only losing the biggest match. The Year 9s capped off a good season with an impressive showing at the Year 9 Tournament in Blenheim, winning every game. Their development under Mike Dunlop was extremely pleasing. The Colts team was a very strong unit, rotating 14 players. The team performed well at the Vettori Tournament with a nail-biting victory over King's College, Auckland. We tried two new sides with the senior and junior development teams. Both performed well. It gave the seniors outside the 1st or 2nd XI an opportunity to play all-day cricket as opposed to being in an afternoon social grade. One of the
senior development players has since moved into the 1st XI. Llorne Howell Acting MiC Cricket
Back in Christchurch, we were unbeaten, with wins over Timaru Boys’ High School, St Bede’s College, and both Christchurch Boys’ High School (CBHS) teams. However, a couple of draws meant we finished as runner-up to the CBHS 1st XI, despite the win over that team in the final week. The term highlights included centuries for Felix Huston against the St Andrew’s College 1st XI, Kavya Shukla against St Bede’s College, and Benji Nation and Flynn Holdem (during a 198-run partnership) against the CBHS 2nd XI. Five-wicket bags were achieved by Hunter Shore, Alf Markham (on debut), and, on three occasions, by Jackson Garry, including a hat-trick against St Bede’s College. The 1st XI caps were awarded to Jack Baker- Sherman and Paddy Cochran. Term 4 In the second half of the year, the team was brimming with confidence, but the results did not quite come.
1ST XI Term 1
The team began the season with a remarkable win over The Willows, just before Christmas. It was the first win in some time and a fantastic team effort in keeping The Willows to just over 300, and then chasing the total down with a few balls to go. The season began with the traditional Trans-Tasman Festival, held at Canberra Grammar. The boys played some good cricket, with plenty of individual successes (centuries to Kavya Shukla and Benji Nation and a five-wicket haul to Austin Smith). However, College only registered one victory, over King’s College, Auckland, in the one-day match.
