4th in the WASZP Open fleet, sailing against much older competitors. Will is indeed the top youth sailor, nationally, in that class. Sam Nicholl must also be commended for finishing 2nd in the 420 class South Island event. He was also an impressive 3rd at the national regatta at Naval Point, only beaten by crews who earned 2023 national selection for the world youth regatta. Nico Blundell was another high achiever, with a 6th at the 420 nationals, as well as finishing 15 out of 75 boats at the Starling Nationals at the Charteris Bay Yacht Club this year. Meanwhile, the second SailGP regatta to be run in New Zealand on Lyttelton Harbour was again an exciting event for the team to experience.

SAILING TEAMS RACING SQUAD 2024

MiC/Manager: Steven Everingham Coaches: Jonathan Clarke, Shelly Jackson, Victor Sue-Tang In 2024, the racing squad worked hard to repeat its gold fleet victory to again finish ‘Top of the South’ at the regional Secondary Schools Teams Racing Regatta off Nelson. This regatta was even more competitive than last year’s event. Each day began in light conditions, but these changed, suiting our team. The strong first two rounds delivered the title, despite a weaker third round. The Secondary Schools Teams Racing National Regatta was held off New Plymouth, a first for many years. The team achieved four rounds of highly competitive sailing against the best teams in

the country, just missing out on a gold fleet placing following a poorer second-round ranking in the five- day event. Despite this relegation to the silver fleet, the boys delivered a commanding, unbeatable two rounds, lifting the silver fleet trophy. It was College’s first ever at the national event and a final 9th placing out of 30 teams. For the third year in a row, College was among the top 10 schools for sailing. Will Leech’s rise in the national youth sailing ranks is complete with a 1st in the 29er Youth trial – earning a New Zealand representative spot at the world championships. It has been a fantastic effort, in part achieved by Will sailing against strong competition in Auckland during most Term 1 weekends. He was also

Thank you to Will Owen for helping with day-to-day team management and organisation. He was recognised with the awarding of the Grigg- Kidner Cup for his service to sailing. Jack Simpson was also recognised as the most improved sailor, showing much promise through his enthusiasm and growing confidence. Shelly Jackson must be commended on her tireless work with team communications and thanks also to Victor Sue-Tang and coach Jonathan Clarke for the many hours of training and work with the team – both on and off the water.
