AWARDS Surfing Colours Archie Whithear
MiC: Kerry Brockelbank Managers: Kerry Brockelbank, Amy Fisher Coach: Nolan Hungerford Twenty-two boys elected to take surfing this year, with the team visiting various locations, including Sumner, Waikuku, and New Brighton Beach – home to the weekly Scholastic Surfing Competition. The local competition comprised three 15-minute heats, with the best waves scored by three judges and averaged to ensure precise scoring. The scoring system is dynamic, adjusting to the surf conditions. Staff newcomer – and competitive windsurfer – Amy Fisher quickly got involved in supporting the boys' progress.
This year’s focus was on fostering a more competitive surfing environment, and requiring each student to compete in at least one Scholastic Surfing Competition heat. All College surfers achieved this goal. It was impressive to see each boy attempting this challenging style of surfing, given the time constraints on surfers. We were delighted to welcome Year 9 students Sholto Backhouse, Dash Flynn, Zeb Jarvis, Jonty Leech, and Ollie Wells. It was encouraging to see new students opting for surfing as their summer sport. The Year 13 cohort, consisting of Thomas Wright, Patrick Anderson, Harry Beaglehole, and Archie
Whithear, relished surfing together and showcasing their skills. Some had been refining their techniques since Year 9, which was gratifying to witness. They enjoyed each other’s company and organised their own surfing trips to the West Coast, creating impressive surfing videos and tackling substantial waves. The season started in favourable conditions at Sumner Beach, where both boys and parents enjoyed the warm weather. The seniors particularly enjoyed surfing at Sumner, a familiar home break. Archie Whithear performed exceptionally on his longboard, placing in two national events and earning his Colours in the sport this year.
Tai Mckenzie surfed well this year, always winning his Scholastic heats and displaying his skills and fitness. Archie demonstrated his outstanding surfing abilities at the Papamoa Beach New Zealand Festival of Longboarding, winning the C-Skins U18 Boys Division. He continued his success at the National Surfing Championships in Dunedin, securing 3rd in the U18 longboard contest and an impressive 5th in the open event. Renowned for his style and skill, Archie frequently ascends the podium at national competitions, showcasing his exceptional talent and performance.
Archie Whithear’s achievements • 1st in the C-Skins U18 Boys Division • 3rd in the U18 Longboard at the National Surfing Championships
