The Senior A boys travelled to Palmerston North to compete in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Volleyball Championships in March, where they made College history as the first team to make Division 1 (Top 16). The young team gained valuable experience under the leadership of coach Nicky Pio and captain Jack Kennedy against some of the best volleyballers in the country, finishing a respectable 13th. It is exciting to see the enthusiasm of many new players and the vast improvements made in such a short period. We are lucky to retain the fabulous Nicky Pio as our coach in 2025 and look forward to seeing the boys continue to improve under her expert guidance in Upper West. A special thanks to College Old Boys Matthew Brett, Jaspar Thomas, and Max Falvey for coaching and refereeing this season.

The season began in Term 4 2023, with nine teams entered in the Canterbury Secondary Schools (CSS) Volleyball Competition (Senior A, Senior Black, Senior White, Junior A, Junior B, two Year 10 teams, and two Year 9 teams). While the six-week Term 4 Monday night competition was short, all boys did well. The Junior A team came out swinging as the boys prepared for the Canterbury Junior Secondary Schools Championships and the South Island Junior Indoor Championships. They stepped up their games in the Canterbury tournament at Pioneer Stadium, finishing 8th in a strong field of 12. This experience held them in good stead as they headed to Dunedin to compete at the South Island championships. The boys had an excellent tournament, with an unbeaten run into the finals where they met King’s College for the second

time in the contest. Unfortunately, College could not capitalise on several match points, and lost, 1–2. However, the boys should be proud of their runner-up spot. In 2024, the season kicked off again with 13 teams entered in the CSS Monday night competition (two competitive senior teams, six senior social teams, Junior A, Junior B, two mixed junior teams, and a Year 9 team). All teams performed well throughout the competition, with fierce but friendly contests among the senior social teams. The Senior A team finished 5th, securing a spot in the top bracket (top 32) at the National Championships – the best ever result by College. Senior B was unbeaten, earning 1st place in Senior Division 1, while the Senior White and Green teams finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in Senior Division 2.
