2019 NORTHEAST BUILDINGS & FACILITIES MANAGEMENT SHOW & CONFERENCE By Gerry McGonagle, BELFOR Property Restoration/New England Operations Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Strategies 15

Emergency Planning and Disaster Preparedness can be vital to the resilience

by a significant disaster will not re-open after the event. The reality is that emergency events of varyingmagnitude are happening all the time, most without warning. Emergencies can result from man-made, natural or tech- nological causes. Many di- sasters cannot be prevented but the impact and duration can be substantially reduced with pre-planned responses. Several planning templates are available through your insurance/risk management resources, ready.gov and other trade associations and experts focused on loss pre- vention. Most plans will help determine required safety measures, the needs of the staff and occupants, what

your critical operations are, who and what emergency resources are part of the plan, how information will be com- municated and the vital steps needed to resume normal op- erations. Your plan should es- tablish 24/7 response agree- ments with recovery partners including a restoration spe- cialist, plumbing/electrical/ mechanical contractors and risk management experts to manage the financial impact. Recovery partners should have the capacity to respond in the event of an area-wide event. Designating a compe- tent public information person will help control the message and manage the public per- ception and unsubstantiated social media fallout.
